Dave -- Yup, it's the 315 poly. Those scalloped valve covers sure do look odd!

I'm amazed that I can still remember that! I've swapped a lot of those out for the 318 engines. The achilles heel of the 315's was the inadequate drainage from the upper valve gear. The holes were too small, and if the owner didn't keep the oil clean it was sludge city! Those engines also came with "shim" headgaskets and would occasionally begin leaking and have to be converted to regular gaskets. Wow, what a great source of knowledge you've turned out to be! I'm a little nervous about the amount of crud that remained in the drain pan after the oil was removed. Doubly so now. Seems like Dodge had a thing about oil flow. That was also one of the shortcomings of the flathead six in my other truck!
Pete
The Mopar engines had a VERY healthy oil pump, and big oil passages. If there was any problem it was definitely in the area of "drainback" from the top end of the engine back to the pan. Also, you have to remember that those engines had just a road draft tube, no closed crankcase system. If I were you, I would convert the engine to closed crankcase and establish some "flow" through the interior to better sweep out the sludge-causing fumes and by products of combustion. I love those sturdy Mopar "A" engines, and the first time I laid eyes on a double-rocker Chrysler it was definitely love at first sight.
