What kind of gun do you use for Hogs?

The title kindof says it all, but I was curious what folks like to use for dispatching feral hogs (caliber/loads/etc.)...

Best I have used is 22-250. Very fast and accurate.

I never really thought about it, Ranchman. I have only killed a couple of feral hogs in my time. One was with a .22 and the other was with a .38 revolver. Both were young (~100-125 lbs) and at a very close range.
I guess I would have to say that I would shoot one with whatever I had in my hands if the opportunity arose, unless I happened to be hunting squirrels with my 12 gauge shotgun. I don't think #6 shot would do much damage to a hog, especially a large one. On the other hand, if I were sitting in a deer stand with my .270 BAR I would not hesitate to shoot even the largest hog that might pass my way.

I think my model 70 Winchester chambered for 300 WIN MAG shooting 180 grain Remington Core-Lokts would be up to the challange!!

I would some day like to give it a try , ..If I ever got the chance to go I would like to use my Marlin, in 45-70 cal. and a 405 gr lead hand load ,,,,,,,,,,,Ya , I know a bit over the top for power .,, but I like that cannon .

Welp, 7mm Mag is my stand-off cartridge of choice for most things (including hogs). I'll admit though I've been toying with the idea of getting it re-chambered for 7 STW just to get a bit more energy though. I'm gonna try and bag one with a .44 Mag revolver sometime soon though.

I just killed a 200lb one with a .308. It took the pig off its feet, but it still got up and ran another 150 feet before it dropped.

What ammo do you use in your .44 mag? I just bought a S&W 629 with the 8 3/8" barrel. I am mounting a Bushnell Holosight on it and plan to use Cor-Bon 260gr Bonded-Core Hollowpoints. This load seems to have the best ballistics of all that I have seen. I only hope they are accurate in my 629 as I know every gun seems to have a "favorite" load. I am mostly hunting deer with this - a hog would be good eatin' too!

I'm using Hornaday Custom 300gr XTP factory loads. I can't say how their terminal ballistics are on game yet as I've yet to shoot at a live target, but they seem to do OK at the range. I haven't shot the .44 much but @ 50 yrds with a scope on it I'm shooting about a 3" group which I'm happy with considering the conditions I was shooting under (wooden bench, muzzle loader fellow beside me shaking things about, etc.) I'll work up a load of my own at some point in the near future, just had to go with factory loads since I ran out of time before the season opened. I'll let you know how they work out if I bag a critter with them.

A 240 Gr sierra hollow point work well. 2400 is the classic 44mag powder. I found in the Desert Eagle I had, H110 worked really well, but had more fireball out the barrel.
Both worked well on 100 metre pig silhouttes. My buddy and I would line up on them, off hand, and knock down 8 out of 8 rounds from the clip, open sighted, unsupported.
From the bench, I could work 3" at 50 yards, again open sighted. I was shooting more back then, and that was before UPS stole my pistol while in shipment.
I put plent of the same rounds through my buddies 629 8-3/8. Similar results, but the Desert Eagle was smoother to shot, albeit a bit heavier.
Took the Eagle out hunting hogs, but never got in a position for a shot.
The pig I did get was with a Savage 99, 300 Savage calibre. Worked like acharm.

I have a friend who uses a pocket knife. He runs them with dogs and grabs them by the back leg. Honest. I have killed them with .22 (head shot) and a .270. Any rifle over .22 caliber (with .22-250 and .223with a well placed shot not included) will do fine as long as you hit a vital area will suffice. What rifles do you already own?

 Uhhh, sorry, but I have to question your friend's sanity on that one. Sounds like your friend might be the type who smokes while pumping gas too or he's been spinning some "tall tales." You won't catch me going after a cornered animal with tusks that outweighs me (sometimes by a substantial margin) and has a well earned reputation for being aggressive in "stress" situations.
As far as caliber, I choose to exercise a bit more velocity & energy to give me some "breathing room." Mainly 7mm Mag for distance shots, and .308 semi for "up close and personal." (At least for hogs, that is.) Been toying with the idea for a long time of getting it re-chambered for 7mm STW (although I’ve also been thinking about getting a .300 WSM or even stepping up to a .300 UM as I’d like to have a .30 cal with some “reach.”)
Don't get me wrong, I like to shoot small caliber stuff too (.223, 6mm PPC, etc.) but that old saying of "The most dangerous animal is one that is wounded and/or cornered" came about for a reason. Although I go for shot placement, the extra energy & penetration help give me some additional safety margin. Sure, if you miss completely all that energy and penetration does nothing for you, but if you do hit your target, it can help turn some marginal shots in to terminal ones.
‘Course I don't regularly tout a .308 with me when walking around my place (usually have a sidearm as it's not an incumbrance), so I suppose I'd use whatever I had with me if I ran in to a "situation" where retreat was not a viable option.

My friend is not blowing smoke I have seen pictures he brought with him holding a hogs hind leg (a small one 100 lbs. or so) and his knife in the other and 2 dogs holding the hog. For the big ones he goes back to the Mule for the .30-.30. My point about calibers was that a reasonable caliber for deer will do fine on a hog as long as you make a decent shot. I have a .40 SIG but I have been looking at a single shot (.243 or .270 I already have dies to reload both) to have around and not worry about my favorite deer rifle getting beat up riding around in the truck or the Mule. By the way he brings some of that hog to the fire station every now and then and smokes em. Boy are they good!!!!!!!!

Let me tell a true story. I'll try to keep it short.
When I was in HS the neighbors had a red/black hog that was in a pen behind our barn. The day came to kill it and they came and asked to borrow my step-dads 38 short 5 shot S&W.
Put a little feed in the trough when he came up BANG squeel and keep on eating BANG.... repeated for all 5 shots..pig still on his feet... butcher said give me the axe.. 2nd hit in the head.. pig down.. still trying to get back on his feet... butcher finally took his long knife and cut throat.. I guess the "poor" animal finally bleed to death.
Well that's the end of the story. If I was going pig hunting today I'd take my mini-mag 223 with soft nose and hope for a well placed shot. Happy Bar-B-Q to all of U

Way back when I was young when we butchered Hogs one shot to the forehead with a .22 would do the job very nicely.

My friend that I was referring to said if you would like join him on hog hunt he will be more than happy to show you "What Texans are made of". I will post some pictures he has when I get to my computer the HP scanner here at work won't let me scan them. He said "see if you can find a bullet hole in any of em."

Well, appreciate the offer, but I got more than enough hogs runnin' round my place to take care of first. They're constantly tearing up stuff and running off native species, so my priorities are a little different than someone looking primarily to set the dinner table.
Going after a 200+ lb. hog (or in my case, multiple 200+ lb. hogs - as I often see them in a group of 4 or more) with a pocket knife - well, this born & raised Texan still believes that's a little left of crazy. I know folks who have wound up in the emergency room or have lost dogs (i.e. killed) because of a rambunctious hog they were hunting. Your buddy can certainly choose to take that risk if he wants, but for me - no thanks - I'll stick to the "best defense is a good (e.g. heavy caliber) offense."

Ruger Super Blackhawk 44mag 10.5in barrel 240gr factory load.  Not a very big one here but I have bagged a 300# with that ruger. In the S.La. swamps most shots are up close and personal.

I am not even a hunter so when I heard of running hogs with dogs and making the kill with a knife I thought people were pulling the leg of this city guy. That was until my business partner went on a hunt and the local guys did it just that way in South Georgia. It is actually pretty common down that way. Most of the time they have several tracking dogs and a Pit Bull, normally, that wears armor, no kidding, who goes in for the kill. The Pit Bull will clamp on to the hog and the owner will finish the kill with a knife. Guess my life has been to sheltered but I'll wait for the videotape.

Mark, I have learned a new dog hunting method, just having moved to AZ. Not hogs as prey, but coyotes. Here in the southwest, ranchers use Greyhounds to track and kill the varmints. Typically, it's 4 dogs and a bitch. The dogs run down and "occupy" the coyote, and the bitch comes in for the throat kill. No armor coating, as the coyotes don't have the teeth the hogs do. I have researched this on the Internet and find using Greyhounds for this goes back centuries. It's what the sighthounds are bred to do...hunt down their game with excellent sight, and speed. The ranchers don't eat the coyotes, but do sell the pelts.

From the pistol side, as I mentioned a .44mag would work well. What would be sweet is one of the late 60's Ruger .44mag semi auto carbines. It looked like a 10/22 with a heavy barrel.
If you wanted something bigger, but still easy to carry, go for a TC Contender. They have some good calibers offered. The 14" barrel with 45-70 would certianly do it. I've fired it on the range. Lots of recoil, but fairly accurate.
My Uncle has a TC Contender with a SSK barrel in .375JDJ. That is a serious weapon. It holds sub 2" groups at 200 yards. It is a .444 Marlin necked down to .375. The folks at JDJ have used it on most African thick skinned animals with good results. I took a few ground hogs at 200+ yards in N. Wyoming. My Uncle has taken ground hog for accuracy, antelope, deer, and elk with it.
Since you already reload, this would be a good one. It's pretty simple to work the brass.
A reasonable calibre for deer works fine. The definition of reasonable is really up in the air though. That's about like asking which color of tractor is best(Farmll Red, in case you were wondering ).

45-70 was on the low side for cartridges like that. In orignal loadings, you could go all the way up to 45-120. That would rock you socks. Then, of course, you can move up to the .50's... 50-110, 50-120, 50-140... The 50-140 Sharps put a 473gr bullet moving out pretty good, at about 1580fps. It don't seem like much, but it moved like a freight train.

If I was to buy a rifle strictly for hogs it would be a Marlin Guide in .450. I was gonna send one to my son in Alaska but he didn't stay. Light easy to handle and a big!!! hole in the end of it. Most shots taken at em will be 100 yds. or under.

Nice round from what I've read. It follows the old rule of big bullet, big holes. Two big holes lets 'em bleed out fast, and if they do run, leaves a good trail.

Ruger reintroduced the .44 mag carbine just recently. It's an updated design from the first model, but looks very similar. A very attractive gun.

The ruger 44 carbine is a great brush gun. Have deer hunted with it for over 30 years and never had any problems. Glad to see they reintroduced it in case I need a new one.

I knew Ruger had brought out a .44mag lever action that looks almost identical to the old auto-loader(except the lever of course). I was not aware they had brought the auto-loader back though.
I had always thought the Mini-14 would be a great .44 candidate. It would have to have a bigger bolt and all that, but that basic Garand design would be great.
I know years back people worked or .30 carbines to bigger caliber, but I do not know how suddessful they were.

Check it out here . Actual price on these guns appears to be around $450. My local gunshop had one on clearance before the holidays for $350. Somebody got a nice Christmas present!

Way back when in "Smoky and the Bandit " didn't one fellow do an admiral job on a whole line up of hogs with a Semi !!
