My Ideas on Whitetail Deer
      12/21/05 10:56 AM

I don't know about everyone else but as a hunter I get bombarded with all of this information that the whitetail population is huge here in GA. But I want to know where at. It sure isn't here. I'm lucky to see 10 deer a year. Oh, and I get so tired of a few anti-hunters talking about how cruel it is to kill a deer with a rifle. Well, I want you to answer me this, would you rather me make a clean, humane kill of that deer with as little pain to that animal as possible OR would you rather let nature take its course and let that deer die a very slow, painful death when you shut all the hunters down and watch the deer population explode? Also, I hear people talk about how people should only be allowed to kill 2-3 deer a year (we have a limit of 12 here in GA). If ya'll want to know the truth, most people only kill 2-3 deer a year around here because that is all you see that are worth killing. Again, these are just my opinions, feel free to respond.

Actually, it is a moot question. When Hilliary is pres you won't have a gun or a bow or anything else capable of a decent kill at a range over 10 ft. They may go after edged weapons next leaving us to hunt with sharpened sticks till we are rounded up and reeducated.

With Susan Sarandon as secretary of the interior and her dream finally realized of all animals being declared sentient and given all the protections under the constitution as you and I (minus the second ammendment in both instances.)

Buy vegie futures now! Great upside potential when the eating of animal flesh becomes a felony.

GAFarmer,
I do not know about your area, but here in Western Illinois we DO have and abundance of the whitetail. I think you should be able to shoot what you can use. I do not think there is a thing wrong with someone keeping their table supplied as long as you do it safely. I saw about 12 of them on my back forty at noon time. Our season is very short and now they are herding up for the winter.

Jim

NH whitetail herd not well I feel, for if one looks at the stats and read between the lines it just doesn't add up.

Each year the harvest reports show higher harvest, but if you talk to long time hunters thru out the state they will say the last decade there fewer and fewer whitetail plus the body size are getting smaller...plus the last 4 out 5 winters the whitetail have had rough winter.

Attending Fish & Game meeting back in 1995 a long time well known bear hunter stood up and said "Your selling us out and in the end you'll be selling wildlife out"...well its starting to happen, for NH F&G cutting jobs & programs & raising fee's and doing very little to nothing to support hunting..the Dir. of Fish & Game saying million dollar plus short fall for 07.

Here in New Jersey we have liberal seasons and we still have deer problems. I can legally kill over one 100 deer a year. The deer situation is made worse by the incessant development. I have dragged many more deer off the road than I have shot this year, which so far is none, because I am waiting, as I do every year, for one particular buck who never shows up. He has given me one look last year and this year, but the shot wasn't good. Starting Jan 7, I can shoot two does a day, every day until Jan 31. I will take one doe for meat Jan 31. I said that last year and didn't see one deer on Jan 31.

Happen about the same for me.
I saw him working the area twice..no shot..and the last day of NH hunting season he back door me..arrrr..went back couple days later for look'z and he must known deer season was over, for he made tracks and left signs so clear that he didn't during the hunting season...ahhh theres always next year.

"kill em and grill em" I support game management and fully intend on taking my share. I have put one in the S.C. record book in my 16 years of hunting but they are all trophy to me. My son and I killed 9 this year between us and every bite of venison will be consumed. I don't believe in wasting meat especially since I know so many people who love deer meat that don't hunt. I have some processed and give to friends, neighbors, and people who let me hunt. About 3 or 4 are consumed in my house a year. The parts of Georgia I have hunted have way more deer than the mountains of S.C. but the lower counties of S.C. do have a lot of deer. We have two ruts here in S.C. The mountains, "Oconee County" where I live the rut starts in November and peaks around Thanksgiving. In the mid and lower counties the rut starts in October and peaks about a week before Halloween. You can find me in the woods somewhere during those times. I live real close to Rabun county Georgia, not many deer there and Stephens County Georgia, which has twice or more times the deer we have in Oconee County. Anti-hunters just don't understand the way game management works. If we stopped killing deer, the population would be out of control, so would disease, poor genetics, and insurance rates from deer damage claims. We the hunters kill deer, but we also work our but off to protect their species and grow trophy, healthy deer. Attaced is a photo of my 140 class 11 point.

Like Tbot, my son and i hunt together. We hunt for a family of four. This last year we were allowed to take 2 a person. We shot all yearlings and fawns, on purpose. IMO there is no better venison than the young animals. We save one tag for trophy hunting. Those of you who dont eat young deer (either sex) are really missing out. Its gourmet.

Many would object to taking young deer, however the natural order of predation is fawns, bucks, yearling does, and, finally matriarch does. It is only us with our antler measuring minds that screw up the balance.

I've eaten deer of all ages and sexes, but only shot one myself. It was a very long shot and I was specifically hunting does. The deer was so far off that I couldn't tell whether it was a buck or doe, and the ranch foreman was with me, looked with his binoculars and told me it was a doe, to go ahead and shoot (open sight rifle), so I did. It turned out to be bambi; just little knobs in place of antlers. Wasn't very big, but sure was delicious.
