Bees nest in the ground
      07/28/04 09:33 AM

We have bees building their nests in our backyard. Unfortunately you don't know where they are until you're mowing the lawn and whack you get stung! My husband gets stung several times every time he mows the lawn in July/August. He got stung 3x on Sunday. Any suggestions on how to get rid of them?

If you can't locate the nest, the next best thing is to bait for the bees. I did this myself at the beginning of this Summer and can say this works. Web address to follow, but in a nutshell, here's the deal: Go to the web site and buy the requisite bait (smelly fish paste or loganberry paste), buy the poison (I think it was Cyfluthrin), buy the trap/bait holders. Mix bait and poison, place in traps, bees eat poison, then go back to nest and spread the badness, in a couple of weeks no more bees. This method will kill ALL bees/nests that ingest the poison and spread it. If you have any neighbor hobbiests that raise honey bees for honey, etc. they will be affected too. This method has no borders.

Follow the links to yellowjackets...it's a good site in plain English from experienced folks. Good Luck.

Welcome to the forum.
It shouldn't take long to locate the nest site. The bees will be hovering over it most anytime of the day. Stand and observe, and you will see. (If I was getting stung that often, I for sure would know where those bees were coming from as it would be pretty close to where the stinging happened).

When the nest is located, a cupful of gas poured on the nest will do wonders, and even better if you light it (best to light a rag on a long stick and reach out to the gas). This works all the time for me.

I wouldn't want to poison all bees, as they are important to crops and flowers, etc. The yellowjackets are the ground nesters, and are vicious, but easy to locate and clean out. Good luck.

Gas, diesel, old motor oil all works wonders on those bees.

Are you sure they are not yellow jackets? Much more aggrssive than bees. Whatever - - find the hole & pour gas down it after dark. There is absolutely no need to light it - - unless it makes you feel better that you are getting even.

Makes me feel better (to light it), and the gas is consumed and not left in the ground (not that I worry about a little spilled gas either )

It makes me feel better, too. Although the time I did it I think I used too much gas. I had a blue flame coming out of the hole that lasted quite a while and because of the way it had permeated the ground, water wasn't affecting it.

I read somewhere that dish soap and water works, too. Something about the bees/hornets can't fly and then die licking the soap off of their wings. It didn't sound like as much fun as gas and lighting it so I never tried it.

That blue flame sounds like a great technique, and it would add to the 'ooff dah' of getting the yellowjackets. Good on ya'

Just as you'd figure. Bush hoggin' the hill yesterday and my bush hog found a yeller jacket's nest. I got luck only one sting on the finger but I knocked many off me as made my escape. Those darn things hurt... I felt it plum to my elbow.
Maybe I'll get up there Saturday morning and find the nest...but I ain't looking a lot, and pour some oil in the nest.

Just don't use so much that it goes "Whump" and leaves a hole in the ground. The idea is to burn em, not bomb em.

Now where did you hear that?

I found a good nest a couple years ago pushing a big cherry tree branch with my FEL. I didn't have a whole lot of hours on the tractor yet and I tried to outrun them on it. The brush hog kept bogging me down and when I pushed in the clutch to take the PTO out... of course the tractor stopped . Not a good move. I jumped off and ended up running a couple hundred yards and snaking my way in and out of the high weeds. I read somewhere that they have a harder time following you if you do this. The tractor sat in the field until that night and I drove my truck up to it and looked it over REAL good before I got out, they had still been swarming it that afternoon when I drove out and looked the situation over. I also loaded up the hole in the branch with wasp killer and never had any fly out, so I guess I won, but it wasn't as fun.

Well, all this talk about bees/hornets on the forums and I went and messed up.
I was pressure washing the foundation of my house getting ready for some remodeling and stuff and I ran into a nest right on the corner. I wasn't using anything but plain water and I sprayed them a little after watching for their access hole and moved on. Later on, when it had started to cool down and the sun was just about down, I poured some gas down the hole and around the area. I wanted to make sure I got through the clumps of dead grass.... and NO, I didn't light it, too close to the house
This morning there's a bunch of ticked off yellowjackets buzzing around the area and I want to paint the block. It looks like they're trying to find other access into their nest. I wonder now if they'll move on or start up another nest or access hole nearby.

They'll probably stick around, unfortunately. If they are all out and looking around, one of those yellowjacket traps might come in handy (the ones that use a pheremone to attract them). But if my experience is any indication they will probably nest again.

I sure don't like those things. I suppose that is OK - they don't like me, either ...

You might also try spraying them with any commercial bee killer (Raid, Black Flag, etc). Some of these shoot a stream that lets you stay way back. If you can drop the number of bees low enough, the whole hive might die. You don't have to kill them all, just enough so they can't keep their bee society going anymore.

I think I lucked out. I only saw a couple reasonably close to the old nest. Maybe I got more than I had originally figured.

I was lucky.
I've hit several yeller jackets (beasts they are) next the past 2-3 years, got stung once this year.
Last Saturday hoggin' on top the hill, weeds easily 5' to 6' tall and the little 'Bota B7500 just cutting and having a ball. Wait, what is that big gray ball on the ground? Hmmm, hornets nests are always in trees....or at least I thought!
I'd had to nugged the hornet's nest thats rested on the ground and bigger than a basketball!
So. made a left turn and hogged over the hill. I'll sneak back up there tonight with a gallon of gas and a camera.
I'm telling you there's noway in the world that I could have mowed that close to something that big without seeing it...but I did!
