Pheasant mishap
      07/01/04 09:49 PM

Help! I was mowing a clover patch tonight and I ran over a pheasant nest. The hen unfortunately stayed on the nest and did not make it. However, the 12 eggs she was sitting on are intact. I have them in a small washtub on an old cloth (on top of pink insulation) with a light bulb providing warmth.

I have no idea what I'm doing but I want to do something for these eggs. Can somebody give me some instruction about this--can I hatch and raise them? how does one go about it?

Thanks very much.

I would think you would hatch them like you would chickens.

Have you done a web search of phesants ?

It would seem like you are doing it right. Turn the eggs every day. Try and find out the incubating temperature and adjust your heat source as required. Now if you could find a broody hen???

It might be a god idea to stop handling them with your bare hands. I've heard that our skin oils are not good for them.

YOU CAN MAKE A HOME MADE INCUBATOR USING TUBAWARE
CONTAINER, AQUARIUM, CARD BOARD BOX, ANYTHING SIMILIAR TO THOSE MENTIONED AND A HOT WATER BOTTLE OR A MOIST HEATING PAD. YOU NEED TO PUT SOMETHING IN TO KEEP TEMPATURE [SPELLING] AT WHAT IT CALLS FOR AND A LID.
YOU PLACE A COTTON TOWEL OR TEE SHIRTS ON THE BOTTOM
OVER TOP OF HEATING PAD OR WATER BOTTLE AND MAKE SURE LID IS ON , I BELIEVE YOU HAVE TO KEEP TURNING THE EGGS.
I USE THE ABOVE MOIST HEATING PAD AND A BATH TOWEL
FOR MY BEAGLE PUPS THAT NEED TO BE HAND RAISED OR COMPROMISED AT BIRTH THIS SEEMS TO WORK WELL AS AN INCUBATER UNTIL I BUY ONE

FYI, typing in ALL CAPS is a form of shouting ... plus it sure makes it hard to read.
