Lady Bug Deterrents?

In Minnesota this last year we've had problems with lady bug infestations. Now that spring has popped, so have they again and we're wondering if there is any suggestion on how to address them?

Ladybugs eat a lot of nasty critters. I'll buy them and release them on my roses. This year, my daughter has decided it is lots of fun to catch them - we gather them from the pasture and put them on our plants near the house.
I understand that they can swarm like crazy in some areas, which would be somewhat obnoxious. Most insecticides would work, though, if you really want to get rid of them. Anything you use will also kill other (potentially) beneficial insects. There are soap based treatments that may be less toxic.
But they are harmless - all they eat are soft bodied insects and leave the plants alone.

My 5 year old has got a little ladybug house.The lady bugs it seems prefer a larger house,ours.They havn't been to bad so far,some move in in the fall,and move out about now.During the winter most stay hid pretty good because you never see many.I'm not wanting to spray them as of yet,BUT,if they get bad enough,I guess a mans gotta do what a mans gotta do.Take deer for example,so far they have not wanted to jump over my 6 ft. garden fence ,but ifin they decide to eat my garden up I planon hanging some deer hides over the spot in the fence where they jumped it.I wish people would stop feeding deer,they don't know my neighbors yard from mine,and like I said I have no problems shooting them.Wild things are supposed to stay wild.Sorry,I got off on a different subject,I'm in the ranting mood tonight I guess. The over wintering ones bite. I've had them take a couple of nips off me, not like a skeeter bite, more like a fly bite.

I am wondering if you really are referring to the "asian beetles" and not "lady bugs". The asian beetles have become a real nuisance. They have the shape of the lady bug, but have black spots on their back and swarm in the fall, get into every crevice, and pile up sometimes in huge piles, and do bite (unlike the calmer lady bug). The asian beetles give off a strong odor and also "bleed" orange when picked up. I don't like them, and hope soon that someone comes up with a trap or "poison" to get rid of them.

Huh, I didn't know that any of them did, either. I looked 'em up in a couple of gardening books before replying, too, and they were reported as harmless.
The ones we have out here don't bite, or my daughter would be full of little insect teeth holes  . She just grabs 'em and throws them in a jar - it surprises me that any of them live, but almost all do...

The do bite, or the pinch the far (fire, for non-hillbillies) out of you. I've been had by the critters.
Don't smash them they stink up a storm, I've found a shop vac is the best away to get them off of what they gather upon, then dump them in a covered trash can.

Here is a site that is specific to the Asian lady beetle. I see there is another critter called the Asian longhorn beetle that can affect trees.
Different from the "lady bug" which it is erroneously referred to, and causes confusion. asian lady beetle

Ah, thanks for the link. I was taking out the trash and thinking that I'd do some surfing to try and resolve the mystery. (Yes, I think odd thoughts at odd times  .) So your beasties are different than the ones we've got. Mystery solved (although the problem sounds like it will be more difficult...)

Nope. These are plain, garden-variety, lady bugs with the red backs and black spots. I don't know whether I should spray for them or not - we've been vaccuming them up every day and they just seem to keep coming in.

All her life my wife has played with LadyBugs, as have many of our friends. Redish orange little critters with black spots on them.
One day one flew up and landed on her exosed midriff and immediately upon landing bit the ^&(*^%$ out of her. She is a bit more circumspect with regard to handling them now but still tries to round some up and "herd" them into her garden. I would seeriously try to find options other than wholesale slaughter. They will mostly survive being vacuumed up and dumped in the garden.

I still bet they are those asain beetles.... little wings and smell plum awful when smashed.

I have a drift of beatles at the end of my shop under the outside light. They are literally piled up (drifted like snow) against the roll up door. Everyday there are more. They smell pretty bad. These beatles are about an inch long and fairly dark brown. They invade the shop building along with a hord of crickets. I sprayed some of the interior walls with malithion (sp?) and spread diazinon pellets all around the outer perimeter. I wish there were an easier way to discourage these pests that was more envirofriendly (except to the pests).
I haven't squished any of the "LADY BUG" looking thingies but my wife has and claims no bad odor.

That's those asain bettles, lady bug wanna bes. Grab the shop vac. They are bad around here too but not like they were 2 years ago.

Our Erhlich rep. at work told me I could use soap in a water solution to get rid of Boxelder beetles, mixed some up and used my pump sprayer...and it worked...killed the little buggers and cleaned my porch at the same time! Never tried it on the lady bugs

We're in Mn. too,those darn beetles are terrible! I have heard they don't bite,but instead it's like an acid that they "pee" on you that irritates your skin. If you find a way to get rid of them,let me know!
Man cannot live on bread alone.He needs peanutbutter,too.

The Asian Beetles tend to migrate towards soybean crops as well. I only have problems with them the years soybean crops are surrounding my land. A bug light will sap them.
The slower you go, the faster you get there!

Since I got my guineas last year, no beetles, no ticks, no fleas, no wasps, no mosquitos. If you can stand the noisy things, they will take care of your bug problems.

One of those little spotted pests got in my coffee pot and it tasted plum awful. I was eating sloppy joes the other day and all of a sudden there was something crunchy in my mouth ,I had to either spit or vomit real quick. I hate lady bugs! I bought two automatic sprayers from the farm and home store,they give a shot of fly spray every 15 minutes,the $6 can of spray lasts a month.Havent seen a ladybug alive in several weeks.And my coffee tastes alot better now.

This is a great thread. We are infested with what I believe are a variant of the friendly domestic lady bug. These look the same and are the same size, less than a quarter inch long. But they bite and breed and cluster and are a pest. A friend of mine is highly involved with agriculture and told me the government imported these things a few years ago to combat some other insect and now the nasty little things are everywhere.

The Asian Beetles really love soybeans - that is all the other insects that eat soybeans. Last two years that was all my farmer planted on my place and they swarmed like crazy during the fall. Just unbelievable how they find and sneak through the tiniest cracks. My only defense was a shop vac. Their only defense is that foul smelling yellow liquid they give off when you pick them up. Yuck.
Bottom line- If you raise soybeans make sure you harvest early as you can. Hopefully the South side of your house is down wind so it carries the beatles somewhereelse.

a couple weeks ago the house was being swarmed by these things the try to get in throught the window frames. i sprayed wasp killer in all the window tracks. the part where the windows slide up and down. i was tried of opening it and finding 100's living on top of the window or in the tracks. spray fromt the top and let it run down inside. it worked!! for me. and ther not back.
