Is this some kind of frost free hydrant?

The valve in these is located at the bottom. Each time you shut it off after running water from it the pipe from the ground to the handle drains out a "weep" hole at the bottom, underground.

Maybe yoiu are hearing the "drain down."

Here's a big YEEK for ya, Pat. Several years ago a local contractor was filling water trucks from a hydrant using one of those thread-on meters with the anti-siphon setup and so forth and a quick shut-off valve at said meter. The neophyte helpers didn't think about the hydrant being a drain-back type (dry barrel) and they didn't know that a hydrant like that can only be operated in two positions: WIDE OPEN and ALL THE WAY CLOSED. In any other position it is squirting water under pressure out of the weep hole. They were using the quick shut off valve and had the hydrant about half-open. After two days, the subsoil became like soft ice cream and their tandem axle water truck sank through the pavement into the resultant sink hole.

Yup, Dave, ignorance is bliss, to a point.

Owwwwww... that's so very true. A case in point would be an incident that happed a few years ago in Califonia. There was a newspaper strike in the Bay Area and management was still getting a few issues out the door despite the striking print shop personnel. One of the strikers; who had apparently connected an outlet for his brother-in-law's backyard barbeque rotisserie and thought he was now an ace electrician; came up with a brilliant plan. He would go over to the enclosed, ground level transformer on the front lawn and shut the power off to the plant. So,.... somehow he managed to unbolt the door to the enclosure; which in itself was amazing since it requires a special five-point socket. He swung the door open and reached for what he thought was the disconnect switch, and it turned out to be the loop end (where the "hot stick" would go) of a 12,000 volt primary fuse. The resultant arc blast threw his desiccated body back out to the street, and dropped it at the feet of his fellow union workers on the picket line. Oops!

Never ever thought about the weep hole putting out water when hydrant was on. Thanks for the heads up could explain why the hydrants were freezing up in the winter (some). Of course former owner putting hydrant down 4' and frost line going to 6' some years may explain it as well.

No fun, change the rules!!!

I try to always run my hydrants wide open so I know that I'm not squirting water out of the weep hole. I also listen for the vacuum as the barrel drains back so I know the hole is still open.
