After a period of time the resin can get clogged by acting as a filter and then channel effectively losing much area of surface contact.
The resin can be changed or it can be cleaned. Sometimes it degrade from abrasion.
Cleaning is simple. Just a matter of taking it out of the canister and placing in a tub with water to get all the accumulated crud out. It can also be done in place by lancing, backwashing and using air to get the resin back to individual particles. Doing this too vigorously can flush resin out the overflow.
The unit itself should not have to be replaced as the resin is the acting agent in the chemical reaction. Newer units may have more economical controllers depending on what you pay.
