GE water softener help!!!
      09/10/06 01:48 PM

I have a medium sized GE water softener less than a year old. Worked great for a few months then started leaking from the control valve. Took the control apart and found nothing wrong and put it back together... that stopped the leak. Now I don't seem to have any soft water. It does the regeneratio cycle and seems to use salt and there is water in the bottom of the brine tank. I checked the little cone filter on top and it is clean. Any help is appreciated!

Unless really familiar with the make and model of softener it is often best to have a person knowledgeable to look at it.

Has your water hardness changed? Is the softener still set for the correct grains of hardness? Is the bypass valve possibly still set in bypass?

You need to test the water before and after the softener for hardness. If the water after is as hard as the before, then there is something wrong with the softener. If the after is not as hard, then the softener needs to be regenerated with the mximum salt dose for the volume of resin in it; 15 lbs/cuft. And you have to do that twice with as little water use between the two manual regenerations as possible.

You can get a hardness test kit at most hardare and big box stores or take a sample to Sears or most local water treatment dealers.
