      08/01/05 10:23 AM

Hi,I'm new to the list & thanks for making this possible. I am having my 1st experience w/hydrants and need some help. The water is spitting out like it has lost it's syphon, won't catch to full flow. The other one on the same line works fine, this one worked fine until recently. Any suggestions?
Thanks

So when you turn it on it isn't producing full flow?

If that is the case it sounds like something in the valve has gotten messed up. You may have to disassemble it and see if that is the case.

Correct, it acts like it wants to catch, but continues to spit water. You are talking about disassembling unit above ground?

That's what I was thinking, Mike. If you have a shutoff for that water line try taking the top off and I think you can lift the valve assembly up out of the vertical riser....Your local farm store might have valve rebuild kits, hopefully you just need new fiber or rubber seals.

If you have air in the line, where do you think it's coming from? It won't be getting in the line to the hydrant without a leak in the line. So what does "catch" mean?

If you mean a steady stream doesn't exit the faucet, then the valve in the hydrant isn't opening and staying open. That could be caused by a loose seal washer screw and the washer is wobbling and shutting off the water as much as opening to let it flow. You can replace or tighten the washer and screw by shutting off the water to thew hydrant, then remove the handle and pull the rod and seal washer up and out of the pipe. Some hydrants are 6-10' long. They're just like an outdoor faucet but much longer.

Thanks guys for the input and suggestions. Guess I will be disassembling the top half today. Washers and O-rings ~ such little things that can cause such big headaches. Thanks again.
