Just for grins I'm thinking about drilling a hole in my well cap and adding one of those old fashion hand pumps. Right now it has this stupid looking mini well house around it. I'd prefer to build something bigger and functional!
I have water about ten feet down. Any one see a problem with drilling a hole in the cap and then sealing it up after I send the pipe down? (Since it cast, might have to torch a hole.)

Somewhere I seem to recall seeing an advertisement for a hand pump that hooked up just about the way you describe it.
What I don't know is if most handpumps would pump from the depths that modern wells work at. If I recall right, the smaller pumps are for wells under 30 feet. I think it might require one of the larger handpumps like you see at State Parks, or something specially designed for the task.
