Air Bag Warning Light
      03/10/08 06:02 PM

I have a 2001 Ford Ranger, supercab, 2WD, 4.0L engine, automatic, etc. As with many other instruments, it has a light in the instrument panel for the airbags. It comes on when you turn the key on and goes off after the engine starts (if everything is OK). Well, now it blinks 4 times, brief pause with light out, blinks 6 times, longer pause with light out, then repeats that about 3 times when I start out. Then the light just stays on until the next time the key is turned off. Of course, the owner's manual tells you nothing except to get it immediately serviced. The service writer at the dealer says that's flashing a 46 code, which is an indication of a problem with a tension adjuster in the driver's seat belt. But he says to be sure, they'd have to run a diagnostic test ($60) and then if that's the problem, the part would be about $50 and the labor about $50.

Does anyone know or understand any more about these things?

You may be able to buy a book detailing all the codes and even get a device that will indicate the code but that is for vehicles over 10 years old.

May be see if you bypass the tension device and if the code light goes out???
