no power to 4wd actuator
      11/24/07 12:06 PM

I have a 91 4wd silverado. 4 wheel drive no longer engages when lever is moved to either 4hi or 4 low. the transfer case engages, as i've verified the front drive axle turns when shifted to 4wd. I jumped 12 volts to actuator directly and indicator light then came on as normal. What controls power to actuator? thier are no switches on shifter linkage and could'nt find any wiring to or from transfer case.

Pretty sure it is vacume actuated. I think the actuator is on the driver side of the axle. The lights have nothing to with the engagement.

I have a LMC catalog in front of me. For model years 88-98, they show either an electronic actuator ($169) or a Thermal actuator ($90). Another option is to replace the actuator with a "Posi-lok manual cable system" ($200).

If you still have not fixed this yet you can do a posi-lok. Do a google on posi-Lok or you can make one. This is a common problem with the older jeeps too. We put a dana 30 solid axle (from a jeepwrangler)under my son's s-10 and made the posi-lok kit ourselves. The homemade posi-lok was pretty simple and stuff from our local hardware store only cost about $15.oo. Just google homemade posi-lok. Still works good after about 2 yrs. good luck Troy.
