The problem with cameras is that they try to capture the picture at a value of 18% light reflectance (I'm pulling this out of my head from a photography class from 30 years ago - so cut me some slack here  ). Snow pictures have a much higher amount of light. This means the white snow gets underexposed to try and decrease the photo to the 18% level. Attatched is your first picture corrected by my Camedia Software "Instant Fix". This takes the lightest pixel in the photo and sets it at absolute white, and then adjusts all the other pixels from there. This makes for a brighter snow scene.

That sure did make an improvement. Still wish it could've captured the true reflective light the snow was doing right at that particular moment. It looked really cool and I wanted to share. Thanks for the correction and the photo lesson.

100% correct DocHerb! For snow, or beach pictures for that mater, you need to force your camera to provide more exposure than it would normally provide. 1.5 to 2 stops will usually do the trick.
Some cameras cannot do this, but most can. How you do it varies from model to model. Was the picture taken with a digital camera?

Yes, it was. It is an older Sony Mavica. Will only do 1024X768. Need to play with the settings more.

Experience mostly. 1 to 1.5 stops is a good starting point. Most cameras don't allow more adjustment than two stops anyway. If you need more than that, you need to switch to manual settings and and take control.
If the scene was all snow with one person standing in the field, you'd need more compensation than if it was a snow scene with cars and people etc. filling a lot of the area in question. Similar situation exists with what's called "backlighting". that's where a person is standing in front of say a window where it's really bright outside and dimly lit inside. Depending on how much of the scene is covered by the person vs. the bright window, more exposure is required. The camera doesn't know what you want. It thinks the total scene is 18% grey. This was mentioned in a previous posting.
For use with handheld light meters, I used to carry a Kodak 18% grey card for metering. If you meter from the card, rather than the scene, it's then OK cause that's what the meter expects to see.
Some cameras can automatically bracket the exposure with one press of the button.

John, your Olympus has the ability to do Spot Metering. Spot Metering means instead of using the entire picture to determine the exposure level it uses the bracketed [ ] area in the center of the picture. So, if you are taking a picture of a person standing in front of a snow bank or a backlit scene they will not be overwhelmed by the brightness of the background.
You can also see what the picture will look like in the electronic viewfinder or on the LCD (I use the viewfinder). If it looks too dark, I move the focus point to something that's a little darker and at the same distance from me (so the focus is the same), which lightens the picture, hold this focus and take the picture. (This is a lot harder to explain than to do.  )
I also think (didn't have time to check the Owner's Manual for my UZ-2100 this morning) your camera has AutoBracketing where the camera will automatically take multiple pictures at different f-stops.

Good point about the spot metering feature. I didn't know if his camera had that. If he posts the model number, we can look it up and see what he has to work with.

Hi Mike & Gary,
Yes, mainly concerned on my Olympus E100-rs...
I've said it before... it's got so many bells and whistles... sometimes it can get a little overwhelming...
Most of the time, I play it safe... but would really like to get max use out of it... other than the few features I originally purchased it for...
Keep that great advice coming... I'll learn as fast as you can throw it at me...

I found the manual on the web ( http://mavicausers.org/FD81.pdf ) and on page 10 it says you can vary the exposure +- 1.5 stops.
So, depending on the amount of snow vs. non-snow, I'd increase exposure by one stop and then try 1.5. At least on the LCD you get some idea of the effect.
I see on Pg. 36 that there is a beach/ski mode under the Program AE settings. That should give more exposure. Maybe more than the 1.5 stops that you can add with exposure compensation.
Give it a try and tell us how it works.

Yep.. that's me about half way up Denali (Mt. McKinley in Alaska)... wonderful place, but MAN is it cold... caught in a storm at 17000ft with 35 to 40 below temp .....and then there was the wind..
No summit..

Curtis, when you going back to Denali? I was going to go there in '89 but my climbing buddy and I started seeing women, then marriages, then kids... well you know the story. I doubt I'll ever climb it but it was fun planning back then. When did you try? Standard route? What time of year?

17K! Do you use bottled Oxygen like they do on Everest? IIRC, in aircraft Oxygen is required above 12K or so.

DocHeb, I also have the Camedia software. Just upgraded to a new PC, and have tried to find a version of Camedia that will run on WinXP. Does the version you have run on XP? If yes, where did you purchase it, or how did you get it to run on XP? Thanks.

My wife and I were both completely captivated by the sheer amount of flat farmland in the foreground of your photo! Forget about the beautiful scenery -- the joy of being able to plant veggies and not worry about the tractor tipping over was what got our attention!

Bob, I had my Olympus Camera and Camedia Master (forgot the version, but now running 1.2) before I upgraded from ME to XP. I can't remember for sure whether I upgraded after I changed to XP or not, but if you need software downloads, go to the Olympus web site and click on software downloads.

Wow. Ouch. Brrrr. It sure is beautiful but I think you're nuts, in a good way. I'd climb a mountain to be at a beach... : ) or hear some good bluegrass but it's gotta be warm.
I ain't got enough long johns to keep me warm at 0, much less at -30 .

Ooops been away for a while.... Went in 2000 and 2001 no summit! Boo.. weather one year, and flu the next..
A week at 17500 was enough for me!
As to oxygen. none needed. Yep needed for pilots etc. because of quick change in pressure.
with proper acclimatization, it is OK...
we take soemtimes upwards of 2 weeks to really make it to the high mountain so your body can get used to the lower pressure..
That's why a climb on Everest can take 3 or 4 months!!
