" jacklighters"
Fellows who drive around at night using spotlights to locate and shoot deer. The hillside is soft and their vehicles leave ruts. They also drive over some of the areas I have just planted to grass or buckwheat so their access to the field was restricted for these reasons.

Yes, poachers. But the process is known here as "Shining." (sp?)

They are poachers here to but when they use lights at night we call them Jacklighters. Sometimes the wardens have planes up at night looking for them.

Our DNR has taken to using mechanical deer. They set one or two of these up along with a bunch of video cameras. The decoys are pretty primative, but do move their heads based on remote control. Watching the video of people stopping their vehicles, getting out, pulling a gun from the back seat and shooting the decoy is a riot. Especially when they figure they missed the first time and try a second or third shot. Sometimes the DNR trucks actually get there before the guys even realize something is up.

The Wisconsin DNR is now using this technique (night, light, road shooting) to bring down deer in the CWD eradication zone. Came across 4 of them one night (11 pm)with a rifle (in shotgun only area) on a tripod, and a big light on a tripod, sitting on the county road in the back of a pickup (govt. license) shooting at deer in the spotlight. Didn't used to be legal, but now anything goes, (even carrying a gun on the tractor to shoot them). But they did all have orange jackets and caps on, but for why, I don't know.
I and a neighbor were going to fix up a doe decoy complete with reflectors for eyes to see how many "sharpshooter' bullets it would attract.
In the past, our DNR would get a real charge out of catching the road hunters, shiners, jacklighters, whatever shooting at their buck decoys. Guess they were taught well on how to do it.

We are all watching your CWD project with interest and dread, knowing it will probably get here soon enough. I caught a rumor that such a deer has been found in Michigan, but if it has, the DNR has not yet gone into action. Their published plan is very much like Wisconsin's. As many whole cow herds as were destroyed to eradicate Bovine TB, I can imagine what they'll do with deer they don't have to pay for.

It's completely different, between a cow in a pen or in a fence, and a wild deer in a herd that runs free. Just isn't a way to kill them (deer) all, so we will have to take our chances with just reducing thier numbers. Fortunately (so far) there still exists a barrier between the deer, elk (cervids) and other animals and humans. No scientific evidence that shows it otherwise. A lot of media hype that stirs up the possibility though. Lots of money will be spent out of our pockets on this disease long before it is over.

Much harder to keep track of freely roaming deer. I don't think they can stop it in a wild population.
The problem is that there is too much misinformation and not enough fact. I've had people tell me that all you have to do is cook your meat well enough and that'll take care of it. At the same time, I seem to remember the British burning a lot of cows and then realizing the protien was still in the ashes. Makes me not know what to do. Yes, I do Eat More Eggs!

They call it spot lighting in this area and it's just as illegal as "shining", but that's another topic entirely.
