Golden Orb Spider
      07/26/03 09:32 AM Attachment

This is an adult Golden Orb Spider. They spin/weave a very distinctive web and are quite striking in their golden coloration. They are a moderately large spider and in the words of Douglas Adams, "Mostly Harmless." They don't bother people. If you approach one on its dorsal side (back) you can trigger an interesting behavior by touching it on its back a couple times to make it swing a bit in its web.

The spider will start making "push up" motions to make it bounce its web to and fro. This is to intimidate whatever disturbed it by making itself seem ferocious/aggressive.

I wouldn't try to force my finger into its fangs but over the years I have never known anyone to EVER be bitten by one of these beauties.

Pat,

Looks like what we call a banana spider around these parts. I don't care for spiders too much but I don't bother these guys. They are too big to miss (walk into their web) and they are a beneficial insect so I leave 'em alone, aside from teasing them to make them bounce their web!

Chris, About your animated graphic... Is that your thumb on top of the banjo or is that the tuning peg of the 5th string? I used to mess with a 5 string back in the early 60's when the Kingston Trio was big stuff before folk lost out to protest, psychedelia, and heavy metal.

Pat,

It is... uh, heck I don't know! I never held a banjo in my life. I just thought the country looking fellow would look good on a country life forum!

Maybe you have heard the words to a song, "ring ring the banjo..." That ring is from the 5th string. The 5th string (top string) has its tuning peg located midway on the side of the neck. That string is not fretted, just strummed. Its sound adds in to the "adjustable notes" made with the other strings and gives the 5 string banjo its unique sound. The 5th string is somewhat like the pipes of a bag pipe that aren't fingered but just make their one note.

I like the little animated cartoon. Well, gota go, gota dump the dust out of my sporin.

Hi Pat,

Interesting information. From what you say I would guess it is a tuning peg. Yeah, that's what it is. I knew that all along but just forgot.

Thanks for the compliment. When I found the little guy I knew I had to use him for my picture. He looks a lot more country than I do, that's fer sure.

Sporin... okay, I'll bite. What is sporin???

Chris

Aye lad, a sporin is the little "purse bag" that you keep your stuff in when wearing kilts. They have no pockets.
