Wingnut meets Winter
      03/06/03 07:17 AM Attachment

Well, finally, winter has decided to visit my little place ... so I can finally join the "look at my snow pictures" crowd

I'm just not used to having no snow for most of the winter and having a 6 inch snowfall considered as a major event. We had a "snow day" on Tuesday and it dumped 6 to 7 inches on my place. The horses seem to enjoy it as it makes it more fun to find those last 3 blades of grass that might just be under there.

The snows not really deep ... the horse is just short ... this is Mandy, the best little tri-color broodmare in .... well, at my place anyway. The first was a surprise (we didn't realize she was pregnant), and the second was every bit as easy. Mandy's a whole 31 inches high at the whithers.

OK ... here's the house ... looking at the back/poolhouse with my shop on the right. Nice to actually see some snow around it ... but I'm not sure it'll stay long enough to get the sled out of the back of the garage.

finally ... just for interest sake, here's an icicle. I thought it was somewhat interesting because I'mn used to a different law of gravity wherein things hand DOWN!

I first noticed that the melting snow was dripping on the shepherds hook flower hanger (beside the back door) and creating a icicle. I was surprised when I came home the next night and found it looking like this ... just had to snap a pic ... my guess is that the wind was blowing ????

Great pictures Pete...

Now tell me a secret... did you "shovel" the snow off the deck or "sweep" it...?

Hey Pete, where in mid-Michigan? I had the distinct DIS-pleasure of driving to Detroit (from near South Bend, IN) yesterday morning in that snowstorm. It was by far the worst trip up there I've ever had! Glad I drove my own truck with 4WD instead of a company car.

Anyway, nice pics. I'm surprised you haven't had more snow this winter. Seems like we've had some on the ground forever now

Wingnut, nice pictures and a nice place you have there. How much land do you have?

Hey Pete, where in mid-Michigan?
just a bit northeast of Midland or north of Saginaw depending on which you're familiar with.
We seem to be in a "pocket" that precludes snow ... this dump was twice as much as we had the rest of winter combined. Not good since we're in the 3rd or 4th year of a drought around here.

Steve ... the reason I took that picture is because it stunned me ... I thought someone had repealed the law of gravity. As I said ... the only explanation I have is that the wind must've been blowing (like it always is here) and was constant enough to keep the drip blowing ot that side.. Certainly the most unique icicle I've ever seen ... and I've seen my share ...

teeny tiny little place, Spenser ... my deed shows 8 acres, but I'm using about 12 or 13 .... since I was mowing the cell tower land (they never bothered and it looked terrible) between the house and pasture ... I kinda fenced it off and feed the horses.
Weird plt ... 1 acre at the front, and a 36 foot wide strip leading to the back and then 7+ acres back there.
But ... it's only 7 minutes from work ...

I would sure like that!! I've got a 30 minute drive each way everyday. Not too bad once a day but when you ahve to go back for emergencies in the middle of the night it's a pain!!!

No stairs here. Just 50 ft to the kitchen for tea.

Hank,

I can only handle so much tea. Even had to go to a semi-caf on the coffee.

I've got a 30 minute drive each way everyday Been there, Richard! I used to have a cross-country drive to work ... 45 min each way ... well, coiuld be significatly more in the winter, with 70% being poorly maintained gravel roads. This is heaven now since, weather permitting, I can ride the motorcycle to work.

I probably could spend most days working from home like some of you as I do 90% of my work online ... but I find I have way too many distractoins at home (spelled "w-i-f-e").

lots and lots and lots and lots of water sitting around, Steve ... culverts are still frozen so the water just sits. Few isolated patches of snow where the sun couldn't get at them ... but they'll be gone today. FOG ... big time this morning ... visibility was almost to the end of my nose (and my nose isn't that big).
Took advantage of the weather yesterday to ride the Goldwing in the annual (49th, I think) St. Paddy's Day parade in Bay City .... sunny, warm (63 indicated on the temp display on the Wing when moving) ... just a gorgeous day.
Supposed to start getting colder again tonight ... we'll see if spring is here or not. I guess I'll have to take some Wingnut meets MUD pictures next )

Brrr. Lived in Indiana for a while and I really don't miss the snow or cold. We hit 74 the other day out here - and I'm still wearing a sweatshirt or sweater when I go outside.

Gotta fire up my bike, too. It is time to ride...

Yeah, Pete, lots of mud here too. As much snow as we've had, it's gone down drastically. We dropped about 4 inches today. Friday, there were places I would have been wading hip deep. Now, I'll get my shoes wet.

Heavy fog this morning and yesterday. Actually, I just looked out and it looks like the fog is already coming back. The temp was 68 at the bank in Cadillac today. Not bad when last week we were suffering through below zero nights.

Steve

the weather lifted just in time for us to have a fantastic St Pat's Day parade in Bay City.
Here's why I thought it was nice:
