Dog Paralyzed
      12/06/02 10:44 PM

Our beloved cocker spaniel is in the doggy hospital tonight after having back surgery yesterday. We are hoping for improvement that will mean he will be able to walk again.

He was fine day before yesterday, but started acting sore later on, and didn't want to get on the furniture. Then when I took him out to do his business, he couldn't get into position and just laid down. He got progressively worse, and whimpered in apparent pain. My wife slept with him on the couch, as he wanted to be ON somebody, and that eased him for a while.

However, the next morning (yesterday) he couldn't move his hind legs at all. We immediately took him to the vet, who sent us to a special surgery clinic about an hour away. They performed back surgery (a doggie neurologist did it) yesterday afternoon, removing disk material from 3 herniated disks in his lower back.

The surgeon says there is an 80% to 90% chance for improvement, but as of this morning he still couldn't move his legs. Not a fun weekend wondering whether he will regain the use of his rear legs, and get all of his bodily functions back.

Fudge ( a chocolate cocker) is only 6 years old. He's had some disk problems before that were treated with rest, but this is a new, acute rupture according to the surgeon.

We sure do miss the boy.

We went to visit Fudge again this morning, abut 36 hours after surgery. He is improving, moving his hind legs a little, and has seemingly regain control of his bladder. We are cautiously optimistic.

Alan -- Our thoughts are with you! There are plenty of folks out there with the "it's just a dog" attitude, but those of us who enjoy the love of a good dog know better!

Keep us posted. Pete

Her care cost more than the kids.. But she's woth every penny to see the joy she brings to the kids faces we all love her. Good luck to your dog on a fast and good recovery. We know how you feel first hand. Our thoughts to fudge and his familey , Larry

Good luck with Fudge, Alan! Dogs are true members of the family. I know what you're going through. Our mastiff, Mulder, had to have surgery on both his knees, and it was tough for him and us, but he's OK now. In fact he's better than ever!

It sounds like Fudge is improving! Here's hoping he's back on his feet very soon!

I hope fudge keeps improving, but remember if he doesn't (let's keep our fingers crossed), there are doogy wheelchairs and diapers. As long as the dog's happy and health otherwise, Fudge can still live a nice life.

We brought Fudge home today. The surgeon says he is doing well, and they released him a day early. He still can't get up or walk, but is getting more movement back there. He has to stay in the carrier for 2 weeks other than taking him out for his business and short exercise periods.

Doesn't want to eat even treats, but otherwise seems OK, and we sure are glad to have him home.

Alan,
Sure hope ya'll gave the guy big welcome home huggs.
Animals sense so much from their "Masters". I know THEY are the Masters, we are just allowed to live in their home with them.
Glad he's doing better and you were able to bring him home.

Now that he's home he'll purk up and recover fast. If he's like our Itsy Bitsy he'll play possum afterward. I would give our dog a command and she'd start gimp'in around long after she was well. It was funny yet very interesting to see a dog was that smart to try and gain sympathy from it. Our type dog is skittish anyways but she really played that up Here's hoping fudge is runnin soon! :

More progress today. Fudge is putting weight on his hind legs, and taking some steps with little help from the harness. Starting to eat some treats, but has not eaten any dogfood since he got home. Looks like he might drop a few pounds, which is OK.

Right now Fudge is relaxed on his human Momma, on the couch. Really the first time he has really stretched out and got comfortable since his back went out. He even laid on his back for a while.

I got up before work this morning and cranked up the Skilsaw while everyone was asleep and built a ramp off the deck into the grass yard. There was about an 8" dropoff and since he's not supposed to be jumping off of stuff or going up or down stairs, I figured this would help us when we take him out.

We go back next Thursday to get the stitches removed and to get a consultation from a doggie physical therapist. The rate he is improving he'll be walking by then I think.

Today we are having a hard time keeping Fudge under control. He is now getting up and walking, doing his business with the proper body English, and wanting on the furniture. We have another week of strict kennel rest, but he wants to move around all the time he is out. He's also eating his dog food too.

A week ago today he had just had surgery and we didn't know if he would get better or not. Right now its looking like complete success.

If he's doing that well, hopefully he won't need therapy.

Alan-Great to hear Fudge is coming along real well.

I can't imagine what I'd do with my 160lb Newfie given the same situation. I guess that would be use #104 for the FEL Chuck

Alan, it's wonderful to hear that FUdge is making such great progress.

As the owner of a lab mix (Wolfie) with progressive arthritis in his hips, I can definitely empathise with your initial dismay and recent great relief. It is so sad having to watch them struggle and suffer.

An update on Fudge. Not quite 6 weeks since his surgery, and he is doing great. Pretty close to 100%, Fudge is jumping on the furniture and we are doing our best to restrict his activities.
