dew claw removal
      06/08/07 04:27 PM

I've inherited a mini weiny that has a dew claw on the back leg.... I don't suppose it don't hurts anything but was wondering about cutting/taking it off! I thought about the ole rubber band around the tail trick that they used on boston terries but know nothing about if it would be ok to do! I don't even know if it's possible but was wondering if anybody has ever tried this or just cut it off....? I'm not doing anything with it at this time & probably will let vet take it off but was just wondering! Thanks for info

I don't know anything about removing them, but unless it's causing a problem getting hung up on stuff when the dog walks or runs, I'd probably leave it alone.

Is it "connected" to the leg by a bone, or just attached by skin? If by skin only, I'd probably go with removal.

Good luck and enjoy your new companion.

Check with your veterinary.

Thanks y'all for the replys;>) It's just attached by skin and has a sharp little claw/nail... that has scratched my daughter once..I really don't know how/why the claw/nail grows but it does...but YOU can really tell the dew claw is just attached by skin...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dewclaw

Seems they have them front and back and at one end of the dog the claws ARE attached.

That's a very interesting article on Dew Claws on animals! Think at this time I'll just leave it & trim claw when I trim other toenails!

Probably a good plan but you might need to trim the dew claws sooner than the others since they ordinarily don't make contact and get worn down as the others do. Snagging on family members probably won't wear them down fast enough.

Over the years I never had dew claws treated by a vet on any of our dogs but our situation was just that, ours, and your mileage or dew claws may vary.

We have a French Beauceron with double dew claws on his hind legs. This breed, only recently recognized by the AKC (for what that's worth) is relatively rare in the US but can be dated back to the 1600.

The standard calls for leaving the dew claws on. I know of two other breeds, the Newfoundland and the Pyranees(sp?) that have the doubles.

Other than that, I thought that the dew claws are usually removed right after birth?
