I have a Shephard/? mix. Sammy. He looks like wolf because of his long legs - gets complements all the time on those legs!
Whenever we are in the city, there are plenty of sirens that go off as well as a bunch of dogs that kick in with their own cries along with those sirens. Sammy never participates and he doesn't seem to care one way or the other.
Last weekend we were staying up at our farm cabin. A neighbor dog was sleeping on our front porch. Then a bunch of Coyote started to howl and yip.
The neighbor dog let out a high-pitched howl. Then Sammy let one or two go inside the cabin. Somewhere around 3am in the morning.
Well now ... Sammy is a typical Shephard with a VERY loud voice. His howl not only woke me up, but it sent shivers down my spine. It was a deep and piercing howl.
I get a similar (but not as strong) feeling when I hear Coyote howls in the distance. To hear that up close and inside a small enclosed cabin is quite another experience altogether.
Anyone else with similar experiences?
Martin

Egon, we all warned you about that breeding experiment between the poodle and wolf!

Let's see, a Lab and poodle mix is a Labradoodle. So a Wolf Poodle mix would be a Timberdoodle? Naw, I think that's a bird of some kind.

My Malamute sings everytime she hears a siren or my Beagle/Lab mix starts barking. She's pretty funny about it though. She'll stop as soon as she sees she's got an audience. My nieghbors think it's hilarious.

One night during my Army days a few of us were detailed to go sit in a particular spot for a few hours so some other unit could conduct a recon mission on us. So we sat around the campfire and yakked as soldiers will do. Then the coyotes started up in the hills around us. One fellow made the mistake of letting us know he was scared by them, so our resident Navajo got a twinkle in his eye, then started talking back to the 'yotes. They must have liked what they heard, because they began answering. And gettting closer.
The closer they got, the more scared the city boy got. THe more scared he got, the more our Navajo called them in.
Great fun!
I like the sound, myself.
But maybe not IN my house at 3AM!
