A great loss at Dobber's Pond...
      09/30/02 10:25 PM Attachment

Caesar, a wonderful St. Bernard, expired today.
Lynn (my wife) called me while I was out, "just wondering when I would be home", I could tell something was wrong. She told me that Caesar was dead. He apparently just laid down in the fence corner up by the driveway, as he would normally, and just never got up. There were no signs of struggle or pain, for that we are thankful. He would have been ten years old in December, which is fairly old for a Saint Bernard.
He was one of the best dogs ever, from an owners perspective. He was very loyal and made our home safe as no-one would dare enter the premises with him around. Respected by all, kind and gentle to those that knew him, or better yet, those that HE knew, he was the protector. We made him out to be a bit more fierce than he really was - it does not hurt to let folks know to be cautious, and not to come around while we are not there. He only ever bit one person, and she pretty much deserved it, she never came into the house again w/o escort. Good job Caesar, sorry, Lindsey. (It was not that bad, but, she did have bruises on BOTH butt cheeks!)
Although she would not admit to it (then), I knew that Lynn would sometimes bring Caesar and Camille into the house when I was gone hunting or elsewhere. She slept well then. I did not mind.
We laid him to rest this evening in our "pet cemetery", next to Sunshine, one of our all time favorite cats.
Caesar will be sorely missed, never replaced, and will always have a special place in our hearts and memories.
RIP,
Dob

It's always tough to lose a loved member of the family. You're right, he will never be replaced, but the hole he left in your heart might someday be filled back up.

Dob -- I feel your pain. Losing a loyal companion is the hardest loss for we dog lovers, but all of us cherish those wonderful memories forever.

I am very sorry to hear that news. I am glad there was no pain, he went the way we all want to . Peacefull, in a place he wanted to be. I am dreading the day I get the same call. I have three dogs, one is 12, the others 9.

Dob, I am very sorry for your loss! I have a St. Bernard, too, and she one of the loves of my life. They are fantastic dogs.

I hope you believe, as I do, that you will be with Caesar again someday!

Thanks for the kind words.
We've been extra sweet to Camille since, as they were buddies - hanging with a couple of basset hounds just ain't the same.
We are thinking of getting either another Saint or perhaps and Irish Wolfhound for her to pal with now. I've already got feelers out to some rescue groups and the like...

perhaps and Irish Wolfhound

Never been around one of those giants, but we have always had other sighthound breeds (Ibizans and Greyhounds). Sighthounds are a wonderfully different type of dog, gentle, independent (read as not "obediance-oriented"), clownish at times.

Good luck with whatever joins your family.

Dob,
Sorry to hear about the lost of Caeser. It's never easy. Reliving the stories like you told in your post helps but it is still hard.

take care.

Yep, so here's another:
Caesar learned very early on how to tell if someone had "fear or not", most dogs have this sense, Caesar took it to new levels. It was kinda his way of determining "who was in control". Anyhow, my neighbor at the time had fear. He was (excuse me) a Candy-A$$ Wuss, actually, "putz" is how we referred to him then. BTW, at this point we are not talking about a 3 foot tall 170# animal, I am referring to a 6 month old growing puppy. John (the putz) would walk across his backyard to his shed. Caesar would see him come out, and he would kinda scrunch down, then as John got about 1/2 way across the yard, Caesar would jump and bark at him. He never went to the fence and growled or the like, he would just get his response and lay back down with a *-eating grin. I would bet $$ that more than once he wet himself, and on occasion he even looked like one of thosee cartoon characters that is running in the air. One more side note - there was a fence. One day my dad (RIP) was over, and this happened. John spoke "harshly" to the Old Dobber (first mistake) by saying something like, "HEY, why don't you control that dog!!" To which my dad replied, "Hey, why don't I just come over there and put this hatchet in your forehead?"

Sounds kinda rude now that I reread it... It wasn't. It was funny as all get out.

It is always so hard to lose a loyal pet and I am so sorry. He gave you great memories and all the love he could.

I have always loved these gentle giants but have never lived with one. We have adventures enough with our two Giant Schnauzers at 100 and 86 pounds.

Pooper scooper duty? What's that???
Actually, we have about 6 big (80+ people) parties every year, and the "pavillion" goes in the back where they stay. We just send someone around with a hose and they just pound it away. Better to do this a day or 2 in advance...
