Golden questions
      07/08/03 10:10 AM

I have a 3 year old female Golden and was looking for some feedback. I live in the country and she is a house dog but she likes to be outside as much as possible. I have farm land around me and she has lots of space. She is always attended while out roaming but also knows her borders.

I just had her groomed but thought they could have thinned her more. The summer heat is hear in central PA. Any tips on grooming that might ease the heat a bit but not hurt the Golden image?

I check her each day for fleas and ticks. What methods do others find best for protection of such things? Collars or sprays?

Craig

Craig -- I have four goldens of my own, plus the occasional rescue. Although a lot of folks put their goldens in short hair mode for the hot months, we've found that practice leads to an overgrowth of undercoat and worsens the problem in subsequent years. (Thinning is fine, as long as it doesn't involve the undercoat.) So we just keep them well groomed at home, attacking matts like zealots, give them lots of FRESH water, and limit their activity at this time of year.

For fleas and healthy coat, we've had great success with a homemade concoction of ten parts brewers yeast, one part garlic powder (NOT garlic salt!!!) and one part kelp powder. The yeast and kelp add nutrients and make for a healthy coat, while the garlic makes them taste bad to fleas. We add a pinch of the mix to each feeding. We haven't had a flea in five years. And another nice side effect is you only have to smell their breath to determine whether or not they're lying to you about not being fed yet!

Pete

Thanks for the feedback and advice. Guess that is why they call it the dog days of summer. I take her to the lake near the house for a swim about once a week. I also setup a wading pool under a shade tree that she frequents.

Not sure, but my wife likes it on her popcorn and they don't bother her as much. Unfortunately, for a day after her dose she smells like an old sneaker! I heard somewhere that just increasing the garlic in your diet would help, but at doses that might blow out the seat of your pants!

Does this mix of yours help with the tick problem?

Not sure, since we don't have ticks (yet) at our lattitude and elevation. Pete
