porch roof
      04/14/05 08:58 AM

My husband and I would like to build a roof over our front deck. It is a doublewide. We have some building experience. We built 3 decks, a storm shelter, a few other small things. Nothing like this. Would this be something we could do on our own or should hired help be called in? Some input from someone who has done it would be appreciated. Thanks

Nobs, it seems to me that if you can build a deck, you could build a roof. Isn't a roof just an upside-down deck? The only thing different would be gravity fighting you. Of course, there is the business of being on ladders. But there are books to guide you. If you are looking for a vote of confidence: I think you can do it!

You might want to look into the metal roofs for decks. I did one several years ago. It was 12 x 36 and went up in one weekend. One side attached to the house and the other to metal poles that sit on the edge of the deck.

We had to order it a week ahead of time. The company cut the roof panels 13 feet long so we would have a foot that would extend beyond the deck floor. They also cut some aluminum I beams that run along the front of the deck to support the outside edge.

When I picked up the pieces on Friday afternoon I felt a little intimidated at all the pieces, however, once we got started, it went up very easily. My wife and i installed it by ourselves.

Good luck with yours.

Bob

It will be a peaked roof porch on the front deck. This is why I'm stuck! What to do first.

nobs, This might be similar to what you want to do. I did this to my house (with a lot of help from my union carpenter Father) the first photo is the before. I don't know what your roof looks like, but if it's like mine you just cut the rafters( lots of compound miters) pull shingles off the existing roof where your going to tie in and nail them up. You don't have to take the sheathing off. I know I made it sound easier than it is, but I hope this may give you an idea to get you started. Good luck. Pictures to follow....

And by all means, owdouglas does not advocate anyone standing on the top step of a ladder. That was only a demonstration for a saftey film!
