Digging post holes versus using post spikes?

I have two projects on my 'to do' list: a deck and a fence (for dogs). I am looking into the issue of the post holes and was wondering if anyone has any experience with using the 30" spikes to anchor their posts?

It seems to me that the spikes would be a lot easier to install but there has to be some drawbacks else everyone would be using them. Thanks in advance.
