O.K. to bury emt conduit in ground?
      07/26/03 06:50 PM

Is it o.k. to bury emt conduit in the ground? I need to run a light circuit to an adjacent building approx. 70 feet away. Inside both buildings I will be using emt.
Thanks in advance,

JRF

I don't think so, as it wouldn't be watertight. Why not use Romex that you can direct bury, UF I think, or the grey PVC conduit?

Its not a good idea. It won't last long and doesn't meet code requirements. Either use a direct burial wire or a PVC conduit which is approved for underground use. Also, be sure to check your local requirements concerning the depth at which the wire needs to be buried. Its usually 18-24".

Go PVC. Cheaper and a lot less work.
The other guys are right the EMT won't be water tight and will rust over time.
PVC will outlast you as long as you don't take a backhoe or similar to it.
