Best type of wormer for pigmy goats
      10/18/02 02:05 PM

What wormer should be used for goats? It doesn't appear that there is anything out there that is labeled specifically for them. Some folks use Cydectin, which is a pour on for cattle and they give it by mouth. Others say they use Ivomec, and I don't know if they mean injection, pour-on, or by mouth. Others tell me Safeguard, if the goats are pregnant, and about to give birth they change from Ivomec to Safeguard. What do some of of you use, and what have you found to be the cheapest and most effective means of dispensing it? Many thanks for your help.

Ivomec is your best all-around solution. Give 1cc per 100lbs. of bodyweight. You can either give it as a shot or give it orally.

We use a product called "Safe-Guard" (fenbendazole), horse dewormer. You would need to pro-rate the dosage by weight as well. Its available over the counter at our local "Agway", but not sure if that is a local chain or national.

BTW: Our goats are Neubian, not pigmys, and I think it would be OK for pygmys as well, but if you are not sure ask a vet.

If you rotate wormers this is a good choice but if you want to just use one wormer and not have to rotate use the ivermectrin.

The worms develop an immunity to just using one. Also certain brands of wormer only kill certain brands of worms. The only wormer that is broad spectrum and hasn't been shown to have worms develop an immunity to is ivermectrin. There is a new out called Quest, which is a moxidectin but it's safety is in question. It has led to the deaths of several foals over the years.

I raised pygmy goats for years and always used ivermectin and rotated with safegaurd. NEVER wormed during pregnancy. Heard too many bad stories to risk it . Wormed right before breeding ....everybody got womed in the barn. Wormed again day after kidding. Never had a problem. My vet told me to always give more womer than less. eg: 50 lb. goat give dose for 75 lb. Its a good idea to have some manure tested for worms. It cost me about $6.00 to have a fecal sample done . Especially if you worm during pregnancy.

Well, you've reminded me that I'm gettin' old. I can't remember the name of the stuff I used (got it from my vet). I've done both the injections and the "drench" (oral). Like Cowboydoc said, my vet recommended against staying with just one type, but the goats seemed to like the oral stuff much better. They didn't seem to mind the prick of the needle, but when you pushed the plunger, they acted like they were being killed.
