Got a headgate finally!
      08/08/05 09:46 AM

And it came with a pretty well done home made chute as well. The chute part doesn't move or squeeze but is well made out of 4 inch angle iron so it is nice and sturdy.

The head gate is the kind I was looking for, the sides slide in and out and are 2 piece folding on each side design as opposed the ones that kind of have a v shape and have more of a scissor movement or the ones that are more like saloon doors that swing back towards the cow to release them.

Now that I finally have the headgate and chute, I can start putting my working pen stuff together. I worked Sunday on cutting the angle iron pieces from the chute and rewelding them in the right place to attach my fencing pannels. I think I will either buy or make some alley frames, a couple of those should be all I need to keep the panels fixed the right distance apart. I also would either like to buy or make one of the backup preventers that sits over the alleyway to keep the cattle from backing out of the chute.

I was also thinking of welding some brackets on the back end of the chute so I can hook it on my 3ph and move it around easier, haha.

And it only cost me $150.

I will have to get a picture and attach it to see if anyone knows the make of it. It is orange.

I have been looking for over a year now, it took a bit.

By the way, does anyone have a plan for an alley arch? I need to make a couple of those and I think I will be set for now.

I guess I could just use some 3/8 flat stock for the bottom strap, any sort of upright and cross piece, then just tack on some chain to hold them to the corral panels or something.

Tim,
I dont know much about what is best but I took a quick run over to my neighbors this morning to look at his.

He has a very heavy strap across the bottom that is about 1/4" thick and about 4" wide. The verticals look to be about 3" square stock and the same for the cross piece. He has braced the corners at the top with the same strap steel that he has for the base.

Besides being rusted it looks servicable. However, I did notice that on one side on the base he did weld another section of 3" square stock to the strap in what seemed to be an attempt to brace it.

Good luck....
Mark

Thanks for the info Mark!

I stopped by a farm supply warehouse near where I work at lunch and checked out their alley archs, they look to be made just as you described, flat steel across the bottom, square tube uprights and square tube across the top. I should be able to fabricate that myself, I will probably stop by the metal supply place and have a go at it this weekend.

I will also need some additional flat stock for making the loops to hook the alley arch to the corral panels on each side, but those should be easy to make.

I guess I could just buy some 'storeboughten' ones but I enjoy making some of this stuff myself.

Ok, I am going to try and attach a photo of the headgate and chute, if anyone knows who made this headgate, please let me know.
