Trailering a Pig
      05/08/05 04:45 PM

Anyone have any experience with getting a reluctant pig into a trailer? I've tried a dozen times with one nervous gilt. So far, being patient, using a hurdle, enticing with food, or just plain force hasn't worked. It's an old horse trailer and she gets spooked (maybe she remembers when we moved her in the trailer previously). She'll get her front two feet into it, but won't go all the way. The other pigs have no trouble going in there and getting fed treats.

Yep, I've had some experience with that, but it's been 50 years. Dad, granddad, & I used to tie a rope on one front leg, just above the foot, using a clove hitch, then you can run the rope through the trailer and one person can hold it to keep the pig from backing up while another "encourages" the pig from behind.

If she's got her front two feet in the trailer several people at the back end just pick up and shove. Using the rope will even make it easier. There are/were "Stock Prods" but for some reason I dislike the use of them.

Thanks, guys. We did finally get her in the trailer with a combination of depriving her of food, except for in the trailer, and a rainstorm. She didn't like getting wet so actually ran into the trailer. As far as the two front feet in the trailer, my wife calls that the "Uncertain Toe Principle".

One can build a 'portable' pen, with 4 sides, just wide and just long enough for the pig to stand (and high enough the pig can't crawl over the top ).
Then just walk the pen up the ramp and into the trailer. No chance for the pig to decide to go anywhere but ahead to keep the rear of the pen from bumping it's 'rearend'.
If the pig stays in the pen while trailering, it also helps to keep it from getting hurt.

We used to move boars that way, otherwise they could be tough to handle when they weighed around 600 pounds and had their mind on something else in the pig yard.
