I am just finishing my new chicken coop, and fence to house 24 chickens. I have been free ranging them but they are laying eggs everywhere except where I can find them.

Here is a shot of the roost. I have hinged the top so it can be lifted, and hooked to the ceiling for easy cleaning.

rfawkes, what climate are you located in. I will be starting a chicken coop soon, possibly attached within the lean to of my pole barn and was wondering about size of the coop compared to number of birds and cold climate... and if it is possible to easily expand without making it too large to start with. I've heard of adding second floors, but haven't seen any two story coops yet.

I am located in Southern Illinois, further south than Louisville, Ky on the latitude map. I have read that for confined birds the floor space requirement is 4 sq feet per bird, or 40 square feet for 10 birds. Otherwise, they will peck each other too much. I have 35 babies brooding in my coop right now, they came in the mail yesterday, I ordered 30 and they sent 5 extra, just in case. I will try to get a picture today or tomorrow. I should be mowing today instead of reading this forum.

Thanks, I really didn't know what the 4 sq ft was for. I thought it was for keeping warm, so their coop wasn't too roomy, but never read a "standard" height for a chicken coop so wasn't very sure this was it anyway.

I had a close call this week, when my chicken coop caught on fire. A heat lamp clamped to the brooder box fell off into the pine bedding and started a fire. My grandson saved my chickens. See the attached picture file.

Good job by your Grandson! Sounds like one of his generation is going to be okay. Like your coop. I don't have chickens right now, but I keep telling my wife "I came in this world with chickens, and I'm going out with chickens."

My chicks are golden comets and black beauties. They are sex link chickens where the sex can be determined my their color.

Golden Comet chickens are a cross between a Rhode Island Red, or New Hampshire Red Rooster with a White Rock female. Pullets are always brown over white feathers, while the Cockerals will be white.

Comets are also very good egg layers. I had 2 & the eggs are huge. I give them to people at work & they are always shocked the first time they see them. So I ordered 5 more comets & 5 barred rocks which arrived end of March. I leave a wooden egg in each nest box to show everyone where to go & I've now got a hen setting on a wooden egg. My father-in-law is bringing me a dozen fertilized RIR eggs tomorrow to put under her. I started w/ 6 for my son. Now I've got 15 with more on the way. Dang those chickens are addictive.
