My niece whose previous livestock experience includes feeding her mom's horse, goats, chickens, rabbits, and doves, recently traveled to southern India to visit with and perform volunteer service for her Guru, Amma. http://www.amritapuri.org
A week or so after her arrival was the quake and tsunami. She was not injured as the waters swept through the Ashram and has had plenty of ongoing opportunities to be of service. The photo shows some of the Ashramites securing their livestock (niece not visible in this shot.)

Here is the jist of her latest email:
We are settling back in at the ashram after 6 days in the "refugee" camp which we shared with 1000 indian villagers. Lots of clean up here, but people's spirits are high. So, back to the routine of waking at 430am for chanting followed by a schedule until 10pm filled with meditation, singing, eating spicy food, doing community service like veggie chopping, giving massages, taking vocal, harmonium, and tabla(drum) classes, listening to talks with Amma, and even sunset yoga on the balcony of the 12th floor!
I know from previous messages that the death toll was quite light in her immediate vicinity but lots of villagers were rendered homeless. I was some surprised at the flooding at her location (southwest coast of India) She is a strong and smart young lady (mountain climbing instructress, college grad) so I suspect she is quite an asset in her community service. They didn't loose any of the ashram's cattle or elephants.
