HOG QUESTION FOR NEW GUY

I'd like to raise a few weaned piglets for slaughter and personal use. I'm planning on allocating a section of the garden for 'hog chow', but wondering what to feed them in the off season. We don't hardly have enough scraps to keep hogs going. Is there bagged feed at the feed store that's available as the sole diet for feeder pigs? Thanks
Dave

Yes, and several brands. With a little experience and/or advice from your county extension agent, you may or may not want to use more than a single feed, though.

Dave, the feed store will have something like "Hog Starter", high protein for the first month or so. "Hoq Grower", less protein, less money. You can buy by the bag or #1,000 totes to save money. The feed also has medication. I try to butcher hogs in October or November so I can finish them off with garden extras, like squash, corn. They have better weight gain in the summer than winter.
You can bring a weiner to #220 pounds in 5 1/2 to 6 months if you have them on keep filled service. Raise more than one so they compete for food.

Al, Would there be feed, as you discussed, however without medication? If so, would I be asking for problems by not medicating? Thanks a bunch
Dave

Dave, I'm sure you could buy non medicated feed, but I don't think you would want to. Read about Hog Feed

We feed ours corn, along w/ the pellets from the feed store and the non-meat table scraps. Makes the pellets feed go a little farer. We perfer the pellets instead of mash, less messy.
its 5 o'clock somewhere
