One of our 3 horses has been diagnosed with strangles. I've read a bunch about it on the Internet and the consensus is that there's not much you can do to prevent it or treat it (it has to run its course).
Any CBNers have real life experience with this?
The horse that has strangles has not been off our property for months. Needless to say, none of our three horses will be leaving the property for the next month.
Abscesses in the throat cause the neck/jaw area to swell. Runny nose, slobbering, wont eat (difficulty swallowing), fever, head shaking and general listlessness. Very contagious. Vaccine available. No real treatment except milk of magnesia to calm stomach.
Our horse was improved yesterday, but there was still a little swelling. Since they remain contagious for a while, we will be watching our other 2 horses closely and wont be taking them anywhere.
Is that the same thing as what they call "shipping fever?" I looked 'shipping fever' up on the Internet and while, like strangles, it is caused by a virus it's a different disease.
