equine recurrent abbscesses
      04/05/04 09:37 PM

wondered if anyone had any ideas on prevention and or treatment of recurrent abbscesses. We have a 18+ Morgan mix mare that has had chronic laminitis with around 18 degress rotation in front feet and has subsequent recurrent abscessess in all feet currently in front left. We have tried multiple different shoeing techniques and farriers..treat with penicillian IM tried stronger antibiotic orally and she quit eating seemed to cause stomach intestinal irritation. We also do warm epossom salt water soaks but boy is she tired of that cant hardly keep her foot in the soak..vets and farriers here are out of ideas...anyone else have any experience or ideas with this?

My vet gave me some stuff to soak hoofs in for abscesses that works great but I can't remember the name of it. I'll try to remember to look tonight. I'm thinking it was called Hoof Healer. I do remember it will burn yours or the horses skin BAD. As far as laminitis, I've always felt better leaving them barefoot, trimmed short, and maybe tape on some stuffed leather pads to support the sole. Thankfully, I've never had to deal with a chronic case, just the occasional flareup after foaling.

We had a friend keep her horse on our farm for about 2 years, and this horse had the exact same problem. And she was a Morgan mix, too. One of the most importantthings to control this problem is to be VERY careful of what she eats. Spring grass can be very rich and aggravate the condition, and you have to be very careful with feed. I know there are feeds made of beets that are supposed to help this condition. I know Agway makes this kind of feed, probably others do too.

Hi, I have a 25+yr old Missouri Fox Trotter who I have had for a long time. He also has chronic laminitis and did get a lot of abbscesses. We went through several different shoes and treatments. First we limited his grass, especially in the spring time,Second, we now keep him in dry areas, out of the mudd. That is one thing that helped him a lot. Third, Our farrier has also been shoeing him with a special shoe that has worked wonders. It is called a rock and roll shoe, and is a alluminum irregular shape shoe and has a "soft pour" poured into the shoe and covers the frog and the sole of his foot. It is filled in so he could not hurt the bottom of his hoof with anything and provides the neccessary support for his coffin bone. he has not had any bouts of laminitis for 2 years (ever since we started using that shoe) and has not had an abbscess for over a year (when we started putting him in a dryer paddock). Also some good pointers that we have picked up over the years is that if you keep him off grass especially in the spring (only a little in his diet), keep him on hay instead, and give him a steady, low protein pelleted maintenence grain, our horse has not had another bout of laminitis. his only treats are carrots. I have been told he looks great, and it has worked for us. Hope it works for you! Good Luck!
