Cleaning up after goats?

My father has recently purchased 15 acres that has about three barns on it. The previous owner had goats, so needless to say the barns are full of goat poop. We are gonna have goats on there also, so how clean do I need to make the barns before we introduce our new animals to the barns? Best method of cleaning? Will lime or D.E. work? I just dont' want to spread any diseases that the old herd might have had to our herd. thanks.

""how clean ? Not sure what diseases you need to worry about, but I would talk to a vet in the area and ask if there is anything special you should do.
""Best method of cleaning? "" If you can't get in the sheds with a loader, then the best method is a scoop shovel and a manure fork. After all is shoveled out, then you could wash it down and scrub the walls and floor with a stiff broom.
You will need the shovel and fork to take care of the goat manure from your new goats so now is as good a time as any to purchase the equipment.
Enjoy

We will be housing boer goats. The previous owner had boer goats also. I am not that worried about the pastures since they get sunshine, but there is just quite a layer of goat dip in the barns.

Perhaps add a wheelbarrow to the tools list and pick a good spot for producing compost unless you will be spreading on the fields.

Johnes is probably the worst thing (that I know of) that the goats can spread from one to another through droppings. There are commercial disinfectants for the barn, after you clean it out. An infected field should be okay after 12 months or so.

Johnes is what I was thinking of, Steve. Also CAE.
Make sure the barn is disinfected after you clean it out. there's lots of products you can use, including bleach.

Rich,
I'm not sure CAE can pass through droppings. (It's possible, I just don't know.) Transmission appears to be mostly vertical through lactation, with some horizontal from grooming. Johnes, on the other hand, is the opposite, mostly horizontal through infected food and bedding, with some in-utero.
Both are nasty diseases.

I'm not sure that CAE can pass through droppings either, but like you said, Steve, it's a nasty disease, so I wouldn't take chances.

Thanks for all of your replies. I am gonna scrape it down as best as possible inside the barn and then bleach the heck out of it. Hope everyone has a safe week.
