Cattle RingWorm
      02/16/04 04:01 PM

Recently found ringworm spots on the steers I'm raising.. searched the net and found various treatments.. bleach & iodine.. Tinactin(Foot Fungus) Cream.. Tea Tree Oil.. etc. Went to local Farm supply.. found some that was for Horses, Cats, & Dogs.. but said not to use for animals raised for food.

I also read that it heals itself once the weather warms up.. and some don't treat it at all.. but since humans, cats, & dogs.. can also get infected from the cows.. I'd like to treat it as best I can.

One steer has it around one eye and on the eyelid itself.. what product would be safe to apply around the eye area.. what product is safe for animals raised for food?

I use blu-kote. You just spray it on once every couple days.

Thanks cowboydoc.. I've only used the blu-kote for the castrate/banding area if looking infected. I sprayed one calf one day.. turned around and he had a purple nose. Came back later and 3 older calves had purple noses too.. I was surpised that they all had licked on the smaller calf. These were fall calves.. but now their backs are as high as my chest.. I guess they would be considered "feeders" now.

Just got my first spring calf on Saturday.. so little.. it's amazing how big they can get in just 5 months. Thanks again!
