Electric fence installation
      01/10/04 01:27 PM

Does the "hot wire" of an electric fence need to make a complete loop to deliver a shock? Or, may I terminate the wire on an insulator where the fence ends at a building?

Thanks

Larry,
No the hot wire doesn't make a complete loop. Just terminate it like you said. The ground rod attached from the ground side of the transformer sets the fence up for the shock. When you touch the wire and are touching the earth (ground), thats how you complete the loop for the shock.
Check out THIS LINK from Tractor Supply for information on electric fences.
