winter watering solutions for ducks
      10/20/03 10:16 AM

I am wondering if anyone has a good solution for providing water for ducks in the winter. We have used the heated dog bowls for our chickens but the ducks seem to be really messy when they drink. The volume of water they go through means that a heated bowl would need to be filled a couple times a day. We have 6 ducks, during the rest of the year they have a kids plastic swimming pool that they use. I don't think I want to put a stock tank heater in one of those, but I suppose that could be an option. Thanks.

For my chickens, I use heated buckets. They sell them at Tractor Supply Company.

As long as your ducks don't try to swim in them, they should do the trick.

I use a birdbath heater in an "indestructible" rubber horse dish for my chickens.

I don't know what to tell you about the ducks swimming in it. If they splash all the water out of it, the thermostat on the heater is supposed to turn it off, but I wouldn't depend on that working.

Some sort of cover with "bill holes" in it maybe?

If you have a galvanized chicken water,IE: a 5 or 8 gallon fount, they make a small galvanized base that you set the waterer on and plug in and it works fine.Go look a Murray McMurray hatcheries. Murray McMurray
