I'm thinking about chickens. However, we have two full grown outdoor cats. Can we raise chickens without the cats killing them? It would be nice to let chickens roam, but I don't see this as likely with the cats.

I don't know about resident cats, but the neighbors all have barn cats that drift in and out, and we haven't had any problems with them. I'd imagine that chicks might be in danger, but a full grown chicken would probably chase the cats.
By the way, our chickens had a good time today eating the field mice they were catching. They're better at mousing than I thought. No mice=no snakes, and that makes me

I think that you'll find that once the chickens are grown up (I'd imagine you'd get them as chicks) that they would be more likely to chase the cats than the other way around. Chickens are pretty aggressive, actually. Around here they are a great deterrant for rattlesnakes - I still don't know how they do it (seen it but have a hard time believing) but they kill those suckers all the time.

We have two barn cats, and a flock of chickens. The cats never bother the chickens, and the chickens never bother the cats. Sometimes the cats like to sneak up on a chicken, and the chicken will spread her wings and run at them, and the cats run away. I think both the cats and chickens enjoy that game!!

I agree the cats shouldn't bother them. Then again the chickens might chase the cats. RabbitRae90

Will cats go after banty chickens? (Mine are are large breed, but I'm curious).
And ChrisJBell, what kind of chickens kill rattlers? We got Rhode Island Reds as my wife said they kill rattlers, so I'm wondering if the breed makes a difference?

I'll have to find out for you. It is my "next door" neighbor that has the vicious chickens. Was over there and they were going crazy over something and it was a rattler. Repeat, *was* after a while. I was astounded - neighbor said I could take as many as I wanted but my wife is reluctant about chickens. Probably scared of them - appropriately.
I'll find out and let you know what breed they are.

Chickens are pretty good at taking care of themselves. We have three outdoor cats (well, when it's above zero outside!), all of whom have shown interest in chicken dinners. But the hens always get away and the rooster beats the stuffing out of the cats! The dogs ignore the chickens as they are more interested in cleaning up after them. Now and then the flock decides to take up residence in the sheep shelter. What a sight! All the hens inside picking through the hay while the rooster and the ram face off in the doorway!

Herbenus, I have bantam chickens that are very prolific despite the fact the baby chicks are the size of ping pong balls and I have two adult barn cats. Both the chickens and the cats are free roaming...and to tell you the truth, the cats are afraid of those pint sized chickens and rooster! My dog once tried to eat one, but I yelled, "Out!" He dropped it, but looked at me as if to say..."What?! Haven't you seen a chicken nugget before?"
The slower you go, the faster you get there!
