Picked up a few chicks yesterday. Am going to try raising a few layers again. My problem is two are being pecked on back above tail. What is causing this and what is solution? Have seperated the two for now Any help welcome TIA Ken in PA
I had a similar problem. Sometimes they get mites and the other chickens peck at them. I put sevin dust on the chickens and that seemed to stop them from pecking each other. The chickens that had sores, I sprayed blue kote on their wounds, and the other chickens didn't like the taste of the blue kote. All is well now!
They may be too crowded....need more room....they need some saw dust or straw/hay to scratch around in...once they start picking, they will/can literally pick one to death.Do you have too bright of a light shining on them?It may be better to remove the picked chick from the others and keep him isolated from the rest, once one starts getting picked they will all be picking on the one before you know it..and possibly kill the chick by doing so....If you have them in an outside pen and they get wet etc...sometimes they will pick when they are wet and crowded...The best thing is try to avoid keeping them confined in too small of a place for too long. It is usally a sign that you have too many chicks/chickens in too small of an area(over crowded)
I'm no expert (don't actually have chickens ) - but I'm looking into getting some chicks. Just read somewhere that if they are pecking (which happens a lot, I guess) that taking some grass sod, dirt and all, and putting that in with them can help. Easy, and probably worth a try...
