Unidentified tree saplings
      10/28/02 09:00 AM Attachment

I have several saplings I can't identify. I'm in S. W. Ohio. The leaves are pear shaped, with sawtooth margins, medium green on top very light green on underside. I thought they were some type of oak or hickory but the notches seem too shallow for oak and too deep for hickory. I'm attaching a crude drawing I made.

From the drawing it looks like an oak from the red oak group (as opposed to the white oak group). Maybe swamp chestnut oak by the drawing. But if more pear shaped than drawn, it could be the Blackjack oak, assuming the leaves are about 5-7 inches long. Good identification is tough without seeing the bark and the buds along with the leaves. Just a quick shot at an answer.

It has a remote resemblance to the Hawthorn family, but as beenthere mentioned, it's really hard to tell unless you can see the bark. Any seeds?

The "What Tree Is It" web site answered my question-- it's definately Chinquipin Oak.
