Welcome to the CBN, gennic.
This is one of those situations that varies between states, counties, townships, etc. Your local police should have some opinions for you, or offer a suggestion for where to obtain your answer.

search your state website for these regulations. Here in Maine they have to be no more than 100 feet apart. The logic being that if your walking a property line that has been posted, at that spacing you should always be able to see a sign.

Something else to consider is depending on your laws, they may not be required. For example, here in Texas, someone commits criminal trespass if they cross "fencing or other enclosure obviously designed to exclude intruders or to contain livestock." (§ 30.05. Criminal Trespass)
I'm not saying you shouldn't put up signs nor that they may not help, (in fact, I'd put them up to help "mark your territory" ) Just saying that you may not need them to stay on the "right" side of the law. As others suggest, best to check out your local laws/codes to get the correct answer.

Good idea, Ranchman. But I took it one step further. In Maine, ignoring the sign and trespassing is a misdemeanor. But taking down posted signs is a felony. So when I put up barriers to keep the dam* 4-wheelers out, I attach the sign to the barrier. So removing the barrier now becomes a felony. Of course, you have to catch them forst.

Hey Rozett, Where did you come up with the felony charge for removing posted signs in Maine? The warden tells me it's only a class d misdemeanor.

Sorry for the delayed reply.... I don't remember where I got that information and can't seem to find it now. Anyway... the warden is right (of course).
E. A person commits criminal mischief and is subject to prosecution under section 806 if that person, without permission of the owner or owner's agent: (1) Knowingly posts the property of another with a sign or paint mark indicating that access is prohibited, that access is prohibited without permission or that access for a particular purpose is prohibited; or (2) Removes, mutilates, defaces or destroys a sign or paint mark placed for purposes of this section. [1995, c. 529, §2 (new).]

I read somewhere that there should be no point where someone can't see a trespassing sign. So ,yes I think there should be signs within sight of each other. I allow people to hunt on our place except the folks on the west side (they're @ssholes) I put up signs every 50 feet over there. I have also used nail strips for the 4 wheeler tires over there .

genninc, if it were me I would ask a game warden since they are probablythe most familiar with trespass laws and property barrier issues. At least they are in IL.

I know this is an old thread, but this is a pet peeve of mine, so forgive me while I climb up on my soapbox.
When you see a regulation or a statute that says a property must be "posted", that does NOT mean the the sign must say "POSTED" on it! That simply means that the signs have to be placed in plain sight, as in, put up on a post. Posted. Like when you put something on ice, it has been "iced". (No, it's not "ice tea" - that would be tea made out of ice! It's "iced tea".)
Every time you see a No Trespassing sign that has "POSTED" on it (usually the largest letters on the sign!), you are seeing ignorance in action.
Thank you. You may return to your regularly scheduled (or unscheduled) browsing.

I'll agree with you about the meaning of the words, statutes, and regulations, but have to disagree with ignorance being the reason for having "POSTED" on the signs. It's just a commonly and quickly recognized notice that tells everyone what they need to know without them having to read more than one word.

Again, I find myself in agreement with Bird and the ignorance comment as well. In Oklahoma and surrounding states there is a "Cedar" plague of trees referred to as "eastern red cedar" but the species is actually JUNIPER. The state biologist several years ago went on a campaign to call a juniper a juniper rather than a cedar. He failed miserably and the overwhelming majority neither changed labels nor for the most part even remember the effort.
Lots of things that "aren't right" become correct usage through excessive wrong usage. Look at the meaning of decimate and you find that the talking heads on TV got it wrong. Decimation is 10% destruction after the Roman practice of decimation as a punishment for rebelling. They would go to a village and line up all the men then kill every tenth one. Bugs the heck out of me when ignorance wins but you have to get over it. POSTED communicates and the reader only has to recognize one word (not even read it, just recognize it.)
Alternatively you can line up 4 coconuts and write KAPU on them placing one letter on each. Kapu is Hawaiian for forbidden and is the universal no tresspassing stay out sign in Hawaii.
On the subject of Texas law and Oklahoma law. TEXAS got it dead right!!! Oklahoma law apparently assumes that the general populace is so stupid as to not realize that the land they are about to tresspass upon is NOT THEIRS and has to be told by LOTS of signs that end up as targets. All land not belonging to the person out and about on it should require permission to make such passage legal. Maybe there could be a provision for "REVERSE POSTING" where if you don't mind non-owners transiting the property you could post signs indicating that.

I agree that no matter where you are at on the boarders of the property you should be able to see at least 1 if not 2 signs.
