Considering Retirement in Maine

I wish, it's my parents that are considering it. Mainers, don't worry they are good people not your typical Massachusetts - holes (You Northern New Englanders know the "term" I'm refering to) . Dad grew up on a farm in Malone, NY (waaay upstate).
Anyway, Pop retired a year ago. Currently live on an acre in MA (1 hour south of Boston near New Bedford). Mom wants more space to run her labs which she trains for field trials. Both are active in church and enjoy sailing (my pic to the left was taken on their boat). My dad also plays the organ and sings in the local choral society. They visited Portland last week & really enjoyed it.
Requirements I've gotten from them are: 1. Space to run dogs - I'm thinking 10 acres +, part has to be field / pasture
2. Close to Portland - Both enjoy the Symphony & Theatre + access to Medical Care <45 - 60 min?
3. Reasonably close to the Ocean - Need to keep sailboat somewhere <1 hour?
4. My own requirement: Close to Sunday River (<1 hour)would be nice
Haven't heard a budget figure, but I'll assume as long as it isn't oceanfront property, they can probably afford it (from the occasional search I've done on realtor.com).
Enough background. I'm looking for the local scoop. Recommended realtors, towns etc.

I have relatives that live in the Waterford area which I believe fits all your criteria..about 1hr or less from portland, I think there is a big hospital in bridgton, its not on the ocean so my guess is that there is still deals to be had (at least compared to ocean front)...lot of lakes in that area too if that is of interest.
We considerd moving up there 10 years ago, but never did. Sure has got built up a lot since then, but still rural compared to a lot of other places.
Mainers sure do dislike people from Massachusetts, but don't let that stop you...I wouldn't let it stop me.
I have heard that property taxes are going up like crazy up there, but not sure what that means as compared to Massachusetts.
Let us know where they end up.
PS: Sorry, don't know any realtors up there.

My wife and I did the same thing about 2 years ago. We weren't quite ready to retire, but wanted to find a place in advance. We had requirements similar to your parents. We have horses and I have a tractor instead of the boat, but wanted quiet space and proximity to the coast. Most towns in York and Cumberland counties will meet their proximity requirements.
I used a friend who is a realtor in Portsmouth, NH (but also has a Maine license). I used realtor.com to find examples of the kind of place we were looking for and she did all the legwork. She led us on several excursions to view properties. In the end, we bought a 98 acre place in Limington. Forty minutes to the coast, but in the boonies.
It was a good thing that we were working on our retirement planning, because my job was one of the early casualties in the current economic malaise. The finances aren't as good as we hoped but we moved the horses up a year ago and are about to sell our NH house.
I'm happy to share my realtors name if they are interested.

Please tell them NOt to move to Maine. We have enough Out-A-Staters here now and the price of real-estate is out-of-site as it is.

Ahhh a true Mainer. I know, you're not considered a native unless your grandpappy was born in Maine. A majority of the realtor's we've been in contact with, have advertised their "True Maine Heritage" whether on their website or whatever. All have been most helpful (of course).
The parents are going up for a week On Sunday to poke around a bit. I'll be joining them next weekend. They are staying in Bethel.
Real Estate Prices ain't nothing compared to Massachusetts.

Haz - Brunswick. Home of Brunswick Naval Air Station. A half-hour up the highway from Portland. It's the next town over from where I grew up. The town has really grown, land values are reasonable compared to MA, Merrymeeting Bay is close, and you are so so on skiing distances. I'm not giving away any secrets - it's been known for years due to BNAS.
Everyone forgets Maine actually started as part of Massachusetts. Mass Hall, one of the original buildings on the campus of Bowdoin College in Brinswick, was named for the state it was in when it was built. Seems funny that since we split from MA, they've been buying it back a few acres at a time
The natives in the Brunswick area are friendly and there's a lot of them left. Good people are welcome. Selfish people exist everywhere - we've got plenty that go back generations.

Well I think they found a place. In Harrison, near Bridgeton (Thanks EJB) overlooking the White Mountains. I'll attach a couple pics if I can. (having trouble shrinking them)

Very pretty place Haz. Your parents must have a lot of gusto as that place looks like a lot of work. Not what people typically think of for retirement (though I love the idea myself)

Thanks Rob. Something tells me that I'll get to help out. I've started researching rotary cutters already My pops might even pay for it - in exchange for free labor
