Good Morning...or Evening to some...
      01/09/03 06:14 AM

Well, have my second cup of coffee and wanted to stop in and say good morning! I hope everyone has a safe day today and all your wishes come true...
Darn this is scary for me to wake up in such a good mood, but I will not complain.
Soon as the light shines and that pretty day starts I will feed those critters darn cows are looking in the window rushing me already! I got up the dog jumped in my bed I don't think I like this new idea that dog has... I fussed and he got down but him being so darn big I don't fuss to loud I keep thinking one of these nights he is going to jump in the bed with me and scare the...well scare me bad!
Be Safe!

Good Morning Tammy and everybody else that is starting this beautiful day. At least I think it is going to be a beautiful day, one good thing I woke up breathing so that to me is a good day. A cold front is finally going to be hitting us this week-end. Gee I hope we get snow.

Your assignment for the day, if you choose to accept it, is to have a rainbow day.

How good can any day be that starts with having to get out of a nice, warm bed?

My girls (the sheep) and Fernando Llama are were giving me the Evil Eye this morning, it was almost 7:30 before I got around to giving them their breakfast. Shame on me...

Fernando Llama
Ha! Funny .... tell us about the llama ... my wife has been hinting, regularly and loudly, that we should have a llama, or an alpaca. I thought it was bad enough when I got her the mini-horses ....

Ya found my weak spot! new [re: wingnut]
      01/09/03 01:46 PM Attachment

Corny names for animals. Had a pair of twin lambs, a ewe and a ram, named 'em Beavis and Butthead. My favorite is a dog I had named Dogless McArfer.

Fernando is a 5 year old gelding. I got him on a mostly on a whim, with a vague idea of making a guard animal out of him for my sheep.

He has worked out VERY well as a guard animal. He's very alert, and nothing, and I do mean NOTHING happens on his side of the fence without his knowledge. If he sees something that shouldn't be there, he sets up a fuss and the dog comes running, and between the two of them, they either run it off or stomp it flat. I used to have an awful problem with skunks and porcupines before I got him. Paid a lot of money for vet bills getting quills out of dogs and tomato juice to get the smell out. Not one problem since Fernando came to live with us.

I wasn't properly prepared for him when I got him. If I'd have been thinking clearly, I'd have had a small pen to put him in for a few days to get him acclimated to me. It was over a year before I could catch him or get near him. He STILL hates to be handled, but he's friendly enough if things are done on his terms. He'll eat apples out of my hand, and I occasionally have to bump him with my hip to get his big butt out of the way when I'm feeding the sheep. Wicked curious critter, if I'm working on something down by the barn he'll wander over and stick his nose in it to see what I'm doing. Have to be careful to make sure he's closed into another pasture if I'm using the chainsaw where he can get to me, I'm half afraid he'd stick his nose into the chain.

He occasionally wanders into the mudroom to check and see if I've left anything edible setting out where he can get it. First time I looked out the kitchen door and saw him in the mud room I purdy near swallered my dentures!

I attached a picture of His Highness.

that story doesn't help! Nor does the picture! If I show those to the wife ... we'll be out shopping for a llama before she finshes reading.
I'm praying there's no such thing as a miniature llame ... or my goose is definitely cooked!

I love your names Fawteen, I thought I was the only weird one. We have Bacon and Eggs, Pigs - Peep a sheep - Halfpint our Great Pyr, and our poor little crooked duck Hunch for Hunchback. And than their is Samson our femal pygmy goat not original at all she just looked like a Samson.

I want a Llama though, I wonder if you could help me convince Dennis to buy me one. Do they have pygmy llamas?

Thanks for the picture he is beautiful. Do you have to brush him and/or shear him? Need a little knowledge just in case...............

"Do they have pygmy llamas?"

Sorta, they're called Alpacas... Seriously, alpacas are WAAAAAAY more expensive to buy than llamas.

If Fernando were properly 'conditioned' to accept human touch, he could be brushed and sheared. Llama fiber is very popular with home spinners. I haven't brushed or shorn him since I got him, as neither Fernando nor I have the proper training to accomplish it.

Llamas are prey animals, and their first reaction to any perceived threat is to run like heck for parts unknown. They do NOT like to be touched and are not the least tiny bit cuddly. They can be 'conditioned' (which is a fancy word for trained or broken) to accept it, but they don't like it. If I had known what I was doing, and if I had gotten him when he was younger and more trainable, he could have been broken to lead, as a pack animal or to haul carts.

As it is, I'm happy with things as they are. Fernando hangs out, looks good and keeps an eye on things, I get to watch him, touch him when he's in the mood, feed him and clean up after him. Mostly, it's fun to watch the tourists get whiplash when they drive by and see him standing by the fence watching the world go by...

Spitting Llamas new [re: toolman]
      01/09/03 09:10 PM

It took me about 2 weeks to be able to read Fernando's body language. He never actually spit at me, but he did give me a few 'warning puffs', which is a dry spit that shows off a llama's trully STUPENDOUS bad breath. I took the hint and backed off.

As we got to know each other, and he came to trust me, all that stopped. I can't remember the last time he even looked at me funny, let alone offered to spit at me.

I've found that (extrapolating from Fernando's behavior) llamas have three 'levels' of spitting behavior: The dry spit, as described above which is there way of saying "Back off!". Next is a slobbery spit, which is the same only with a little saliva. Smelly, but not too awful bad, and is saying "Now, LOOK, I'M NOT KIDDING"

It's the third one, the "hock up a major loogie, rare back and slime you from head to toe" that will cause you to lose your lunch. I've never been subjected to that, and don't expect to be.

The other odd thing is that unlike horses and cats, when a llama lays his ears back, he's relaxed and doesn't feel the need to be quite so alert. Took me a while to find that out, I used to step back in a HURRY when he layed his ears back...

I always tell on myself heck I went over to the picture part looking for Fernando well, then I found him he sure is a great looking critter. We decided to get two donkeys for gaurd animals they were wilder then March hairs. We have them eating out of our hands now but they still will not let us pet them and I am going to try to post a picture of them...

Them's some handsome critters!

Wife has mentioned wanting a mule. Personally, I'd like to have a pair of burros, just so I could name them William S. Burro and Edgar Rice Burro.

I know, I'm not a well person...
