sorry about the horses one is a quater horse paint an the other is a running quater both a from alberta , the paint came from up by red deer as a baby the running quarter came to me via a dealer here that brought him at an auction in lethbridge, supposedly he was out of the cypress hills , they both turned out to be wonderful animals , im real happy with them , wife has plans for more , but thats another debate still , but i will probably end up losing that one lol

what part of alberta were you from pete , and yup your right about the land of high taxs , getting to be that time again too, i see in your profile you have the smaller verison of the horses, with the cost of feed nowdays thats probably a smart move , wife,s been wanting to get herself some , but im not so sure how it would work out with the big ones, course from what ive seen of the smaller ones they don,t take too much from anything haha , maybe i would have to worry about the big horses

I spent most of my life in the Edmonton area ... sold a farm in Thorhild county when they transferred me to Michigan. I'm still an Alberta boy at heart ... but I've learned you make your own happiness ... so home is wherever I am. The mini's were a present to my wife, who is 5'2" and adores anything "mini". She loved the idea of miniature horses ... and I have to resist comments about how some people have housebroken them ... etc. They certainly eat less ... I go through about 500 pounds of grain mix a year (for 6 horses) and about 125 small bales of hay ... certainly reasonable. However ... you can't ride minis (although they can pull carts) ... so you really have to think "pets"

Pipeline? Nope ... worked for Syncrude for the first 5 years they were starting but I've been with a big chemical company since '81. They transferred me to the headshed some years ago ... so I'm well on my way to becomin' a "yew-awl"

hi pete, well your feed bill is certainly cheaper than mine ,i go through that much in about a month an its getting expensive i normaly pay 85.00 a ton for good hay last year had to bring it in from alberta it was 188.00 a ton an i see the grain has gone up too , i suppose a guy could sell the manure and raise the price to reflect the increase in the hay lol, some how i don,t think that would work, oh another thing they all become pets no matter what size they are, someday your gonna have to make a trip back this way , course i been say ing that for years myself im orignally from nove scotia haven,t been back in years , sure hope to someday though an soon well enjoy those horses an if they are house trained let the rest of us know how you did it so we can train ours , gotta go clean the stalls today

Cleaning stalls? Don't want to hera about it .... I was off work (vacation) for the past 4 weeks (that's what happens when you're too busy to take vacation all year and you have a take-it-or-lose-policy) .... and that meant that I got to take care of the hosses morning and night ... instead of just in the evening. Based on feedback from our friend CowboyDoc and others, I stall them only at night ... .but they still generate a pretty good supply of horse apples. I'm pretty happy with the feed baills .... I get 100 pounds of feed custom mixed at a time and it usually runs less than $15 (that's about 10 million Canadian) ... and I've been buying my hay from a local fella for between $1.35 and $1.95 a bale (usually a buck-fifty, but lately he's been getting over $3 a bale at the auction so he (understandably) raised my rate to $1.95.) The little guys go through 100 pounds of feed in about 2 months ... so I can't compain about $7.50 a month! Heck, I'm sure I spend as much buying cat food for the barn cats (soft heart or soft head, I'm not sure). I thought I'd make lots of trips back ... but ... first it was trying not to affect my green card application ... now it's just time and too much to do. However, we did buy a bitty motorhome and a new motorcycle ... so travelling will defintely be in the picture for 2003!

maybe i should be buying my hay from the guy that you do even with shipping i probably would come out ahead of the game i hear it was going for as high as 8 bucks a bale up around edmonton this past fall , funny isn,t it how these hosses are supposed to be the wifes an we end up cleaning the stalls lol i sure would like to get a motor home an do some travelling i think thats the way to go these days, oh well, maybe in the future , but its hard when you have animals to leave for any length of time , i worry about them if i m away for long they become a large part of your family, my shelties are my constant companions id be lost without them , do you still have family in alberta, thats what would be nice to go home for i have some left back in nova scotia id like to see before they are all gone , but its a long ways to go ,oh well maybe someday , catch you later

Hello everyone. I'm new today to the site, it looks like a group of some wonderful people. I look forward to participating and learning for you all. I've been on the sister site, TBN, for sometime. I'm still trying to decide on a new tractor, I've made this into a real project. The more I learn about the different colors the more I confuse myself.
My wife Kathy and I share our houses with four dogs, three Bernese Mountain Dogs and an adopted Aussie, he thinks he's a Berner. We live in northern NJ on a few acres and we spend as much time as possible at our 10 acre ex-farm in the Catskill Mountains of NY. I flyfish the rivers there, some real legendary ones. I have 200 other pets in one of my ponds, trout, I say that becauce the CEO says I treat them like pets instead of fish. Can't argue that one, she's right.
Enough for now, I justed wanted to say hello.

we scratched our heads for awhile when we first moved here about what to do with the dogs when we travelled ... and finally found a "petsitter" who came out twice a day to see to them. Fortunately she also had no problem seeing to the horses when we added them. That worked out great for the first year. Unfortunately, she then retired so we had to start over. We then got our farrier to agree to do the same petsitting ... since her horses are boarded across the street from us. The only bad part is the timing ... she has a 9-5 job which is actually 5-5 ... and those are weird hours for the animals ... so we end up travelling less and less. I usually do all my business travel alone now as she hates to leave the animals. Fortunately, the dogs like travelling so the motorhome wils suit them just fine ... and with just the horses ... the farrier can leave them in the pasture and just make sure they have feed and water. Should work out ok.
My mother is still in Alberta, up in Cold Lake and I have a sister is Edmonton (whom I mostly ignore), a brother in Bonnyville (for now, he just moved back from the Netherlands) and another sister in Yorkton, Sask ... so lots of family to visit when I get around to it. I've flown back to Edmonton twice to visit Mom and we drove back to Cold Lake once before my stepdad passed away to celebrate their 25th.
We're looking forward to spring, now that I have the motorhome in shape. My wife doesn't think 10 hour motorcycle rides sound like fun, but she thinks that towing the bike to Kentucky and then riding it around the state does sound like fun (she wants ot see all the horse country).
I know what you mean about hay ... I have a stepbrother with a 4 section cattle/horse ranch in Cold Lake and so I got to hear about the drought .. shortage of feed, etc. He made out ok ... but lots of others in that area had to depend on the big hay roundup from Ontario this summer. I certainly can't complain ... even manage to get premium hay without alfalfa for the little guys at that price.
it's a shame that common sense isn't

If we would have both looked up at the right hand corner of this board we would have seen Tractor by Net Forum. So Mike I guess you are off the hook because I am sure Dennis has already put it down as one of his favorites.

well you have lots of family to come home for anyway , i know what you mean about leaving i won,t leave my dogs if im going for very long i take them with me , if its just a day shopping where i,ll be on 3or4 hours then i leave them home , not all that safe on the highways anymore either, the horses all i really need is if im going for a week or so is to have someone check on them to make sure they are all right and if they need help to get it for them they are pretty self sufficent in the summer we have automatic waters etc. but i still would want them checked on , but i do like the idea of a motorhome for travelling be nice for the dogs that will be my tool to use to talk the wife into it maybe lol
