Vince,
It warmed up and rained for a couple of days and took all the snow. Left us a good batch of ice for Wednesday. Took me 20 minutes to get the first 1/2 mile down the road. After that the road trucks had dumped salt and sand. Yesterday, it was straight rain and 50F, warmed up so much it even thawed the ground.
This morning it has started snowing again. Not much, just a dusting, with the promise that it will continue for the next 3 days.
Just ran out and took this picture for you, so you can see at least a little snow. Not very pretty with this weather, I'm afraid, if it gets better I'll send along some more.

Allthough, the farther out in the 10 day forecast you look the less reliable it is (this is Oklahoma with some of the worlds toughest to predict weather), nevertheless Christmas Eve is currently listed with a 80% chance of snow. We had a light dusting a few weeks ago that didn't accumulate anywhere but a lot of low 70's and 60's on the thermometer since then. I've been working outside mid day in shirt sleeves nearly every day.
Wouldn't a decent snowfall on Christmas Eve with ground coverage till at least mid morning Christmas day be a delight for all the children (of all ages) hereabouts?
Hope you long suffering folks down under get a break in the heat real soon. Well, some good news for you...Your longest day is tomorrow. After that days will get progressively shorter each day until the equinox in June. If your nights are more tolerable it will be good for you to have longer ones. Up here in the northern hemisphere we are also happy with the winter solstice as it signals the start of longer and longer days. I'm not bothered by SAD the seasonal disorder brought on by short days, I'm pretty crazy all the time. For folks so afflicted, they are looking foreard to more sun time.

Pat The days may get shorter but the real heat starts in February we often get 10 or more days in a row over 100F then.

Relief at last, yesterday it got to 109F but today its back to the 90s i hope it stays that way for Christmas. At present we have a girl from japan staying with us. Yesterday we spent most of the day water skiing and it still nearly killed her.

That is considerably hotter than it gets here. I've seen it get to about 106 but that was only once in my life. I've seen it get as low as 50 below, but that was again only once in my life. We get pretty miserable when it gets to 90 But, on the other hand, 50 is T-shirt weather.
Would a South wind be a cooling wind for you? North winds are cold for us, so I assume it would be the opposite there.

SHF Yes we have a south breeze today. on our back verandah is 30c at the moment 3.00 pm that is very comfortable. At 50F we would be rugged up in jacket and beanie(woollen hat) and 32F is bloody cold. To answer your earlier question the citrus has stood up quite well in the heat so far.

Vin,
Please excuse me for my ignorance on the topics of geopgraphy and climates of Australia, but it would seem that since you live on the southern tip of a continent located in the southern hemisphere that your summers would be mild. What am I missing here? Is the whole continent this hot this time of the year?

Hayseed Very difficult to answer but here goes where we live is on the same latitude as Southern California. Australia is perhaps further north than you may realise, many towns though on our coast do not get as hot as inland. The only places that gets snow on the main land is in the highlands of Victoria (only a very small area). Tasmania which is further south is colder than the mainland but still receives only very small snow falls By the way we are 125mile from the closest gulf and 250 mile from the southern coast.

daedong, Same thing for us, of course. Days will be getting longer but still being rather short, the temps will continue to fall as winter's icy grip takes hold. With the mild-moderate el nino the southern midwest (our area is included) storm track for winter storms will bring more than average precip and storms or so the professional weather guessers say.
My previous post was just looking at the upside potential (bright side?) longer nights for you might give cooler sleeping weather even with hot days, if your humidity and cloud cover aren't too great. We have only had a brief sample of winter so far but it will be back with a vengence. We are under a winter storm warning for Monday, rain turning to snow with 2-6 inch accumulation.
I spent most of Saturday running a bull dozer, my first time. It wasn't too difficult. Anyone who can rub his tummy and pat his head at the same time while reciting poetry and winking out intelligible Morse code messages and tapping his toes to the beat of a rock song might be able to do it. It does not have an enclosed cab with A/C and heat like my Kubota tractor (I'm getting spoiled) so I was more "in tune" with the weather and the chill factor.

Your overall temperature ranges are identical to the ranges we experience here in the Arizona high desert, just shifted by six months. Right now, we are 30° - 65°F, and six months from now it'll be 65° - 115°F.
What is your elevation?

Pat What were you doing with a bulldozer. I have never driven one but i would have thought it was like driving an over sized Bobcat.
Hank Our elevation is only 150mt or 500'. I do wonder whether Australia is hotter than than the USA and very much dryer but i don't know why. You can experience the extreme heat almost any were on the mainland, but some places more frequent than others. in some of the real dry parts like the nullabour plain it can get to 120F several days a year, their rainfall is as little a 0.5'' per year average. that means some years it does not rain at all. The nullabour lies along the southern coast on the western side of the country.

Wow, I thought we were dry with 7"-10" annual rainfall. Here in the high desert we are at 2500 ft. The lower Sonoran desert (Phoenix AZ and south) gets half of our rainfall, however, and is typically 5-10 degrees hotter.

Vince,
Does the low rainfall effect your crop? Do you have to irrigate? It sounds like citrus is quite well suited to the climate.
Michigan is a little bit wetter than you are. We measure our rainfall in inches per month. The El-Nino/La-Nina phenomenon seems to have the main effect of drying us up. We haven't had a real winter in several years, but we usually get about 60" of snow annually. Up a little farther North, they stop measuring in inches and start measuring in feet.
The big Lakes around us moderate our winters and block alot of the weather that everybody else gets. On the other hand, the cold winds from Canada blowing across the lake before it is frozen pick up moisture and dump it as snow on the Western part of the state. Everybody else in the country can have clear skies and if there is a Northwest wind, we can have snow every day.

All our citrus is irrigated from the river Murray.
Do the weather patterns move the opposite way in the northern hemisphere to the southern which move from west to east.

In the US, our weather moves primarily west to east. During the tropical storm season, we see tropical storms forming off the west coast of Africa and moving westward towards the Americas. Once they hit us, and move north from the tropics, they join up with the west-to-east mode as long as they last.

Vince,
Typically, our weather moves west to east. I think the big difference would be the direction of the warming and cooling winds. A wind or storm front from the Northwest almost always means cooler/colder. Coming from the Southwest, it usually means moister and warmer. I would expect the opposite in your neck of the woods.
The guys out East are bracing for a big storm. From watching the radar on TV, it appears that warm moist air from the Gulf of Mexico is being pushed Northeast. It is following the river valleys through Southern Ohio. The problem comes when it reaches the New England area (New York, Vermont). About the time it gets there, it will hit the colder air and condense out as snow. If there is enough moisture in the weather coming from the Gulf, the storm could be brutal. 2" of rain makes 2 feet of snow.
Is there anything you do differently down there for Christmas? Any special traditions we may be missing out on?
Steve

SHF, another variation I have seen is the weather moving "along a front".
While the front in general is moving west to east, the local "weather" moves up the front line, so locally the storms are moving SW -> NE, or sometimes even W -> E, S -> N, or sometimes even in reverse!! But in general, the whole thing moves off to the east.

The big storm appears to be moving somewhat North of it's original track. Still miles South of me, but it looks like Detroit might get smacked before it gets to New York.
I've noticed the front phenomenon too. Summers, I always watch for the wind to shift and come frrom the East. It usually means we've got a pretty good rain coming.
