Deer Hunting Season

Well the 2002 firearm deer season is officially under way in Michigan. Drove into work this morning and the backroads were abuzz with early morning traffic. Thought I was back in the city during rush hour for a moment. The restaurants are booming as well as the bars. The buck poles will start filling up for this years "Big Buck" contest. In this part of the country, "opening day" is revered as much as a national holiday, with some companies closing for the day(probably because if they stayed open there probably wouldn't be anyone there to do the work) It's almost like a holiday flavor in the air. I've heard the song "Da turty point buck" by Da Upers almost endlessly on the radio, similar to the holiday song one hears over and over at Christmas.
What's it like in your neck of the woods during "opening day"?

Hi Argee. This is our last weekend for deer up here - actually second to last for the muzzle loaders.
Not much changes around here accept for the occasional glimpse of blaze orange in the tree stands that are visible from the road. But then again this is not what I would call a deer mecca - mostly local hunters.
I used to go to PA every year to hunt on a friend's property. I remember the first time I went down. I was 15 years old and used to moose hunting (read sitting and freezing for hours and not seeing anything.) I couldn't believe it - I counted 55 in the first half hour.
In the following years, I used to make the trip down just for the doe season. Opening day was a holiday in the small town - no school, no work. It was called "Mother's Day," much to the chagrin of most of the women.
Good luck to you and your group.
By the way, the favorite here on the radio is "Da second week of deercamp."

Shot gun season starts Monday in our area. Open hunting land is very hard to find. We let our neighbors and a few friends hunt our land and they do well. Two years ago 15 deer and last year twelve came off our land. One group bagged three on Thanksgiving Day last year. The best a ten pointer. They share the bounty with us so we get venison the easy way.
This year only one was taken during bow but my neighbor got himself the twelve pointer I have been watching this fall. I hope that is the one who has been racking my new trees.
I have already had to ask some bow hunters to leave my property. They were tracked down by my dogs and I one guy actually was upset because I was in my woods ruining his hunting. I have two one hundred pound Giant Schnauzers that sure do persuade people. I keep them close and do not let them get ahead of me. It is nice to watch them pick up the sent at the road and follow it right to the hunter. My female barks but the male just growls and shows his pearly whites. Of course the 30-30 I carry does not hurt either.
One of the guys I threw off called the Conservation Officer and reported me for carrying the rifle in the woods and not wearing a license. The officer turned out to be one of my former students. I think he had fun coming to my house to check on his old teacher's transgression. I explained that I was only hunting hunters and the state doesn't have a license to do that. That got a smile out of him but we agreed that I would call him the next time. Now I have to remember my cell phone when I go hunting for hunters.

Opening weekend in Texas tends to increase pickup traffic a bit. Lots of trailers with 4 wheelers (and the occasional Jeep) so guys can get to their stand and not have to hike across several hundred acres to get there (Wish I had one!). Motels in the areas known for deer hutting usually have stuff like "Welcome Hunters!" on their signs and "hunter's specials" are common at the local eateries.
Generally the # of trucks with blinds and/or feeders falls off by opening day, but you'll see a few fellas a bit late on their game hauling something to hide in or such even on opening weekend. (I got *almost* all my stuff up a couple of months prior to season to allow the deer to pattern/acclimate to it.) The rifle range is packed just before opening day too. Every year I promise myself I'll get things sighted in early, and every year I'm waiting for an open spot at the bench so I too can make sure my scope is "on target."
Opening day in N. Texas was pretty miserable. Cold, rain, soggy, messy. I've spied about half a dozen deer (mainly does) on my outings so far, but I've chosen to hold off for the "right one" to date. I just kindof like to "pick my shot" I suppose. It's been really warm (up in to the 70's) here lately, so it doesn't "feel right”, but hey, it is nicer than freezing your fanny off because you're staying perfectly still waiting for "bucky" to show up!

MY wife was out filling the sunflower seed feeders and the thistle seed feedersfor the birds this morning about 0700 and saw a good sized buck about 75 feet from the back door. He walked away and came back in a few minutes accompanied by a doe.
I still haven't seen the monster buck (perhaps a mutant with extra large hooves) that leaves tracks about 20 feet from the attached garage in view of the highway.
I keep checking but the local markets haven't run out of meat yet so I haven't taken the trouble to pop one of these visitors. If times got hard, I'd be doin' deer but it isn't worth the hassle, just now.

Here in PA, deer season starts the monday after thnxgivin'. And you would think that is a holiday with most schools closed and many business people taking the day off. In my part of PA, they have a new law on buck which states it must have 8 points to be legal, other parts of the state must have at least 6 pts. Also the combined buck and doe season together. Its used to be two separate seasons. I'll let you know how I did next monday, -Shawn

I like the eight point rule. In Ark. they changed the law a couple of years ago to where one horn had to have three points. The racks have gotten a little better since then but I would much prefer an eight point rule. Many folks might not get a deer for the first couple of years as the bucks were allowed to mature but in the long run I think it would be more beneficial for everyone. The season there opens the second Saturday of Nov. and runs for four weeks. Where I hunt you can have two bucks and two does, one buck and three does or four does.
Good luck hunting!
Chris

I don't have any objection to shooting a doe. As a matter of fact, I would have shot one this year had a big one walked by me, but unforunately all I saw were young does so I did not shoot.
As far as taste, I have eaten both and never noticed a difference. I guess it is all in the way it is prepared.

I will agree with Hayseed. Never have detected a difference between a doe or a buck when the carefully prepared meat was on the table. Years ago I started butchering my own deer, and cutting the meat off the bone, and removing ALL fat and "white" from the meat. Then I grill the meat to medium rare over a hot charcoal or gas grill, and it just doesn't get any better than that. Prefer it over beef anyday.
My son-in-law showed up with a nice buck Monday morning for some help and lessons (I hope!) getting it skinned, cut-up, and wrapped. We put the quality cuts (loin, rump) into packaged meat for the grill, diced the other good muscle meat into 3/4" cubes for stew meat, and the remainder gets cleaned up for grinding into sausage. Pic attached.
Tossing a package of thawed stew meat into a crockpot with a can of tomato or mushroom soup and let it cook for several hours will provide some mighty fine eating. .

I never tried venison medium rare on the grill but it sounds good. That is how I like my beef steaks cooked.
I usually cook the back strap and tenderloins a la chicken fried steak and have the rest processed into sausage or jerky. Occasionally I will debone a shoulder and my wife will tie it together with cotton string, stuff it with garlic cloves, vinegar and cajun spices and cook it as a roast on the stove top. Roast venison au jus served over a bed of rice... ah, it just doesn't get any better!

My favorite is a venison filet cut into 1/2" steaks fried in olive oil for about 15 seconds on each side in a searing hot, cast iron pan. Add some cooked greens like spinach or beet tops on the side, a big piece of crusty bread and a glass of dry, red wine and you've got a pretty good lunch.

Well we're pretty close to ending the firearm season. There has been a few big bucks taken, but dam few. The most gunfire I heard was the day before the season opened up. All the flatlanders had to get their rifles sighted in at their hunting sights moments before they headed in the woods. Go figure.
The weather has been pretty mild so the deer have plenty of food everywhere. They haven't hit any of the bait piles that have been put out on the property. Seen plenty of sign (bedding areas, poop piles, rubs) but nary a deer, except in the bed of some of the more fortunate hunters pickups and at the local buck poles. Seen two in the bed of one truck the other day that had a pretty good spread, other than that it's been pretty quiet.
It's snowing today and the temps are dropping, maybe that will get them moving. How's the season going in your neck of the woods?

The season is over up here. The only deer I saw was a doe that crossed the road in front of my truck as I was heading home from the deer stand (good defintion for "frustration").
It was cold here this year. Opening day was 10 degrees. The weekend after it rained steadily, and the last weekend we had about a foot of snow. Not the most enjoyable season I've had.
There'll be deer in the freezer, though. My dad plays butcher for his group of hunters. Deal is that he keeps the sausage meat. They got 7 this year. Also, he's off to PA on Saturday where I'm sure he'll fill his tags.
My rifles are clean and oiled and are waiting for next season. All that's left for me is some late season grouse hunting and perhaps rabbit if the urge strikes me.

generally speaking...where I live a doe is more tender than an older buck(at least a lot of other people feel that way)...now a youger buck is more tender than an older buck..anyway that is something each individual decides for him or her self. We have a 2 week buck/doe season which we can harvest a total of 4.Then we have a week long anterless season only, after the 2 week buck/doe season then a week long muzzleloader hunt and then starting Christmas day a 3 day anterless season. Lots of deer around here,I had 17 run out of my woods in one bunch Tuesday..It is easy to put deer meat on the table where I live.In WVa

Unfortunately it has not been so easy for me to get one. This makes two years in a row that I have been skunked. The deer sign was there but I saw very few deer this year. I found only one huge set of tracks and I never saw the owner. I know the deer are there because I found fresh scrapes all over but they just refused to show themselves to me. Oh, well. I enjoyed being in the woods immensely and that to me is a lot of what hunting is about. Besides, that is why they call it deer hunting and not deer shooting!
Maybe next year...

Tim,
Since when is it illegal to carry a gun on your own property? I have one with me or nearby due to the number of animals in the area and the potential for one of them to be rabid.
It really is too bad that some "hunters" abuse the privilege of using private property and spoil it for the rest. It segues into the topic of lack of respect and entitlements along with poor upbringing but I won't go there.
We have deer all over the place, both large buck and doe. I have one at the butcher now that a friend shot and did not want (has plenty). We have so many car deer accidents in my area I really think the season should be open longer to thin them out. My wife and I have both hit one in the last several months, no damage to her vehicle but mine was extensive.

Bayrat,
You are right that it is not illegal to carry a gun on your own property. The trespasser told the Conservation Officer I was hunting and using a rifle.
All the time that my neighbors and I spent checking the shared wooded acreage has paid off. The snow also has made it easy to see if we have unwanted visitors in the woods. The last week of gun hunting season there were no trespassers in the two hundred acre woods. The word is out that you will be tracked down. I was away for ten days and my neighbors watched and walked the woods. They were all happy to see the dogs and me back last week. This hunting season has been a lot safer and we now control our land.
A Sheriff Deputy stopped me today as I was walking the dirt road in front of our home. He wanted to meet the dogs he had been hearing about. He got a kick out of their orange jackets and was very surprised at how friendly they were. I guess that is not what he had heard.
