I know some of you like to see what types of construction is going on in other parts of the country, so I thought I'd post a link to my blog on here.
The design is one I saw while browsing for plans on the Internet and the house looked perfect for my lot. The rest of the story is within the blog, and please bear with me, I am no computer guru, so formatting may get a bit ragged from time to time.
I plan to use this house weekends and for holidays for now, then when I retire in a year or two I'll sell my house here near Halifax and move up there FOREVER!
Feel free to post questions or observations. It's no Central Oklahoma Farmhouse, but I'm going to call it HOME!

Thanks Egon, I am already finding out about the no "weekends and holidays off" rule when building a house. Although I hired a builder, I am handling sourcing the flooring, tiles, lighting, all the fixtures, etc. myself, plus I looked after getting the septic design done and am contracting that out separately too. Every trip up to the site (about an hour and a half away) I have a load of "stuff" to take up!

Ian, I think Egon meant no weekends or holidays off when you retire. But that does look like a nice place.

Yes, Bird is correct. I did mean no weekends or holidays after retirement.
You should give yourself a pat on the back for all the work done.
Gary may be able to confirm this but it has been alleged that there is a house in Oklahoma that requires one to pack a bag lunch just to walk from one end to the other or from side to side!!

After retirement, when Friday comes, it just means there are only two more working days left till Monday.
Actually Egon, by distributing "feeding stations" (basement kitchen, wife's tea room upstairs, and the like I don't have to pack food or water most of the time.

Egon, Once we found a tire type for my wifes electric golf cart that wouldn't make marks on the tile and didn't hurt the carpeting on the floors or the stairs she has been able to keep all the food caches replenished without help from the boy scout troop.

It's certainly pretty, and I don't know much about the houses up in that area, but as I've gotten older the first thing I think of is how much maintenance will be required in the future, how hard will it be to do that maintenance, and do I intend to do it myself or hire it done. And having personally known some older folks with 2 story homes who were no longer able to get up the stairs so for years never saw anything but the first floor, I decided I want everything easily accessible; even handicap accessible if possible.

Bird, I was thinking a lot about that too. It's all vinyl siding, vinyl clad windows, 30-year shingles, and a master bedroom and ensuite on the main floor. Upstairs is a guest bedroom and a second bedroom that I will use as an office/computer room, as long as I can make it upstairs. I guess the most future maintenance will be the decks. You know what they say about decks - they were invented by carpenters who wanted guaranteed future employment! It's got radiant floor heat on the main floor (never had it before, love it so far). I ran the same tubing upstairs and through baseboard heaters for the heat up there. Haven't even had to turn them on yet, it gets warm enough from heat rising from the main level.

And looking at the difference between the 2 photos, I see the snow melted by the time you walked around to the other side. So, all that they say about those snowy Canadian winters must be to scare off the Texans who would want to move there for the cooler summers.
Seriously though, great looking house!

Egon Seeing as I have to climb two flights of stairs to get to the master bedroom and have some shingling to do that's up three stories I'm starting to think like Bird.
At least I don't need a map to find my way around the house! Ehh

Hi Gary, thanks. I haven't been on the roof yet, but here's what is at the end of the path that goes beside the house, down to the river. The ice is all bunched up from the tide coming and going, but it froze over as it's 50-50 fresh and salt water at this point in the river.

I like that picture. Looks like the waves are frozen, and I guess they are! I need to go back and look at the URL you posted earlier. I've been to and through NS a few times, most recently about 5 years ago. Met some friends on PEI and then we traveled to NS and took a side trip to NFL. Didn't have time to go any further than Cornerbrook though. Did manage a day at Gros Morne National Park with a boat ride on Western Brook Pond. Pretty nice place.
Been to Pictou, Truro, Cape Breton, and of course North Sidney.

Gary, you sure did hit a lot of the nicest spots in NS - next time plan to visit Peggy's Cove - it's a bit touristy but pretty, and the Annnapolis Valley and some other historic areas not far from Egon, like the Acadian Coast (where some of the Acadians were expelled from before they ended up in Louisiana). Funny you mention Newfoundland, I was just over there today on a business trip, to the other end of the island from where you were.
And yes, Pat, it is a bit Frank-Lloyd-esque, I liked that look. And I suspect you are saying that tongue-in-cheek about the pergola affair over the porch. Everybody figures I should cover that nice architectural detail over with fibreglass panels or whatever, but it's just meant as an architectural detail to let the light in all those east-facing kitchen windows. I don't need any more covered deck, what with the 16 X 16 3-season screen porch at that corner of the house. I have to cut down about 10 tall poplar trees yhough to give me a more clear view out to the river.

Right again, it was just an attempt at humor. I wasn't kidding about the F.L. Wright look though. It is sort of reminiscent of the Prairie home style if you squint just right. Quite good looking!
