I quit half way through the course. To get your basic qualification license in Canada (which entitles you to access all amateur bands above 30Mhz; use a maximum of 250W DC input power, and build your own equipment except for transmitters) it's recommended to take a course first. It covered a lot of electronics stuff (inducters, capacitors, etc.) and very little about modern radio equipment, its selection, and use. I quickly lost interest.

I have a license but haven't been active for years. I've just had too many other things going on. I do plan to get active again someday though! When I was active, I enjoyed sending and receiving morse code more than talking. I think part of the reason is because my father helped learn morse code. He was a Chief Signalman in the Navy and he used to help me practice when I was learning. It's one of my fondest memories of my late father.

KE4MBN de WA1ZPD. Original call was WA1LTO, if I remember right, I got that in 1967. Can't remember when I got the ZPD call, must be sometime during the last century.
So others may live

Me too, Mosey [KE3VB here]. I also enjoyed CW more than anything. Once we get settled in AZ next year, I hope to start operating again.

I was active years ago. I have kept my license current because it was so hard to get. I have forgotten my morse code. I had to look up my call sign below. I'd love to get back at it again. May be when I retire. David -.- .- .---- .--- -. -.-

I have forgotten my morse code.
You would be surprised how it sticks with you, like learning to ride a bicycle.
My wife's (police) department uses a rapid (30 wpm?) code identifier to satisfy the FCC for identifying a station every 30 minutes. When I listen to the scanner on her freq, I find now that I can pick up the code easily, whereas when I was learning for my exams, I had a very hard time keeping up with its speed.

Nope sure didn't! I need to really get on the ball and listen to my code tapes. 2 mtr SSB is really slow and that is where I spend most of my time.

KE4MBN KE4MBN KE4MBN de N6AYR N6AYR N6AYR K
I opened up hobbies for the express reason to send a general call to see how many hams were lurking in our midst and voila there was your call pounding in 5x5. In theory now that I am retired, I'm supposed to have time for more ham radio. Well, it hasn't happened yet, I'm working harder than I did before I retired and haven't even set up my HF station and although I have a dual bander VHF/UHF rig in one of my trucks, it doesn't see much action. Maybe after I get my house built and a few other "little" items off my list, I can set up my HF rig and yak a bit, after all one set of phonetics for AYR is "Always Yacking Radio." I was originally liscensed as KN5DBP (DeciBell Pat) back in the early 60's but sort of faded out of ham radio. Got started again in San Diego, missing the 13WPM by a hair which explains the Tech call. I liked the AYR call so I kept it even though I made general a few weeks later. It isn't that I don't like CW, I do, I'm just not real good at it. At my best I could handle typical QSO at up to about 15WPM. Would probably strugle at 5-10 now. Some of my cohorts and I used to use aeronautical mobile surplus keys that you strap on your leg to work some modulated FM simplex when our jobs had us out in our vehicles during the day. I hope to be able to build an antenna farm in the future as I certainly have room. I was disappointed to find that I missed the last bust cycle of the oil industry in Oklahoma since I had been hoping to buy a used oil derrick to make a tower and a wildlife observation platform.
So, what is your operating situation over in "4" land?
73, Patrick

s1120, Lisc are real easy to get these days. There are real good lisc prep books. You can read through a few tmes and pass the test as it is multiple choice and the right answewrs will leap off the page at you after reading the study materials. Learning to read/copy the code is way easier than you might think. Much easier than learing to play an instrument or speak a foreign language. Give it a whorl, you might like it. There are so many different aspects to ham radio that you should find some that interest you.

When I was learning Morse, I used the Quick Code CD. It uses neumonics to teach the rythm of the letters. For example the neumonic for the letter D is "dog did it". Long short short, or dah dit dit.

I got my general license when I was 12--K2OFP--but lost it a long time ago due to inactivity. I'm so sorry I didn't at least keep my call sign. My father, who got me into the hobby at the same time as he was getting into it, kept his call sign--K2OKF--until he died two years age. Always had it on his license plate.
What's "de"?

DE means "from". Normally used in CW.
Must go QRT now!

Interesting how my long (ago) term memory works. I remember keying "dahditdit dit" a gazillion times as a boy and know what it means, but forgot that it was composed of the letters d and e. Must have known cw pretty well then. I didn't have to go through the intermediate step of translatiing the pings into letters to understand the meaning.
What do people use for keys in this high tech age? I started with your basic Samuel Morse key. Then we got a "bug". It worked horizontally with the contacts on the end of a spring shaft. Are these things still around or have they been superseded by modern technology?

I don't do much CW, but most folks I know use a keyer. Here's a page with some paddles http://www.bencher.com/radioequip.html . The paddles are actuated with the thumb and index finger. This closes a set of contacts and tells the keyer you want dots or dashes. The keyer may be built into the radio, or a separate unit
Some folks use a PC hooked to the radio to send CW. Just type on the keyboard and the PC sends the correct signals to the radio. The PCs can also decode the incoming CW signal and display the text on the screen.

To my purist's eye, that is "cheating" But, I can see its utility in contesting. When I used to do CW, I looked forward to "straight key" night, where only keying was permitted. Something about actually talking to someone else using this low-keyed, low-bandwidth method.
