Pat.....post overload.

Pat, there HAS to be some kind of limit on how many posts a thread can have. Sixteen-thousand-and-something MUST be some kind of world's record; especially for a mostly non-controversial topic. If it were something like a discussion of Bill Clinton's virtues I could see it going sixteen thou, but a do-it-yo-self modern prairie sod house?? You could say that building a bunker in Oaklahoma and calling it a farmhouse is wierd yes, but not actually THAT controversial. I have to say, however, that over time, this thread has helped me become fluent in speaking "constructionese". A lot of the building materials noted were unknown to me; and even more so what to call them. There just HAS to be something illegal; and decidedly UN-liberal about building an invulnerable house out on the prairie. What about the folks at FEMA? What about their self esteem? That's a whole INDUSTRY that you are putting at risk.

That's how many VIEWS it has had -- so far South Central Oklahoma Farmhouse is on Page 9 (with my settings), with about 405 actual posts.

Pat has taken the armadillo as a model for his house. As they seem to be impervious to gunfire, a home built on their attributes must be strong.

Dave, Sorry but this is no little house on the prarie. Part of Oklahoma is prarie. Part isn't. Ignore the pan handle (I want to start a movement to give it to Colorado or Texas (it is contiguous with both.) Draw a line from the southwest corner to the northeast corner. Roughly... the upper left part is prarie and the lower right part isn't. Elevation changes a bit too. The southeast corner is a few miles from Louisianna and is less than a hundred feet above sea level. The pan handle is just under a mile high. Oklahoma has more miles of shoreline than Minnesota the land of 10,000 lakes.

I am in the "forrested" part of the state. We have several native species living here including (but not limited to): White oak, red oak, pin oak, post oak, black jack oak, pecan, walnut, hickory, locust, bois d' arc (osage orange), willow winged elm, and on and on. In recent decades we have had a tremendous influx of eastern red cedar (juniper).

Although many interests are often illegal, immoral, or fattening the Oklahoma farmhouse thread seems to be none of the three. I'm sure the thread police would have commented a long time ago if they thought that the thread was devoid of redeeming social value.

As someone's tag line said, "No one is born knowing this stuff, we all had to be taught." I'm glad that sharing my struggle has been educational for some folks. I worked hard to find and employ some of the various methods and materials. I think some of my subs got an education along the way as well as myself.

We are near the 3 year mark and within weeks of moving in. We won't be done with the upstairs or basement but the majority of the ground floor will be done and more than enough of the functionality will be in place for comfortable living.

Fair warning: I intend to continue this thread into the indefinite future so long as there is sufficient interest on my part AND more importantly the CBN community.

Thanks for your kind words. I hadn't previously thought of the thread as a public service.

Pat

Personally I feel that thread is more of a mini-series kind of thing, complete with a plot 'arc' i.e. begining, ending ( someday maybe ), highs and lows, drama, tragedy, comedy, its got it all.
