BCI Barns just delivered our much anticipated pole barn. They will also be putting it up, so I'll be glad to let you know how it goes. Scott in Sealy - I'll be wandering around there this weekend, so if you are out and about, always feel welcome to stop by.

I am planning to put up a 40x48 barn next year and was wondering if I should buy a kit or do it all from lumber and plans. It has to be an old fashion wood barn though. Let us know how is yours coming.

Nick, I have it marked on my "Things to do" list for this weekend. I was just leveling my place for my barn this past weekend. I believe that I am going to go with a Sutherland's pole barn kit 24x30x12 and put 2 lean-to's on it for now. That will give me a few years to plan to size of my real barn.

Phylynx, If you haven't made a commitment yet you might want to talk to Apache Construction located in Whitehouse, TX (just south of Tyler). They've just completed a 50X34 for me that I'm really pleased with. Hopefully the attachment will come through OK. Good luck.

Update - I wish I had better news but I promised a realistic update.
Barn was delivered October 8, just in time for our monsoon season evidently. BCI has been re-scheduled twice due to weather, but here's the problem - their crews travel around in the south-central states, so once they re-schedule, it's a big delay until they get back.
I have found that their office will give you a date that they are supposed to show up whether it's true or not. Acouple of times the date they gave me has come and gone. I covered the materials, but the trusses continue to sit out in the weather and I am totally frustrated at this point. My wife reminds me that I can't control everything, but I am not happy with the disappearing barn crew at this stage. Materials seem to be holding up OK - thank goodness I covered them with plastic right after delivery.
I guess I'm at the stage where I'm either stuck waiting, or I can tell them to to forget about the rest of their contract. I may contact Apache - I did not know of them - just out of curiosity to see if they will put up this barn.
Weather has absolutely killed our barn and home construction schedule
UPDATE - BCI contacted me back - they are scheduled to start Wednesday morning.

At long last the crew started this morning. I never heard from them yesterday - their office forgot to let me know that they were stopping to do some repair work along the way. Finally took calling the owner to vent. To his credit he made it right and let me know what was happening, but I get tired of chasing this sort of thing down. Not the crew's fault - they are working as well as they can to get ahead of many rain-delayed barns.
I'll take some pictures along the way - man I hope this thing looks good when it's done.

Amen to that.
I went by and checked out the progress - nice bunch of guys doing the work. Construction quality is very good. We got to talking about cars so I guess I slowed them up a bit As is not uncommon the crew in the field does the best they can despite the incompetence of the home office.
As of yesterday the wall framing was up and they were finishing setting the roof trusses. Always neat to actually walk into what was once only on paper, especially when it means the reality of moving operation out of a 2 car attached garage into a 2000 sf shop
I was lucky on materials - I had babysat the lumber and my raised dirt pad for 6 weeks, covering both with plastic and checking to see what the rain had done. Everything survived - I had put the straight lumber off the ground, but the truss at the bottom of the stack did not fare too well. It's waterlogged and looks nasty. They will make the needed repairs to strengthen this truss. Everything else looks like it survived and that the new barn will actually look new when finished.
I was also concerned that the painted roof and wall panels would discolor or spot from condensation formed between the panels as they lay on the ground but they look OK. They were up on 2x4's and had a little slope to them so condensate could run off.
Bottom line is that if you get materials delivered - no matter what the office says - cover them if you are waiting on someone to construct them!

Chevdog, glad things are off high center. In my search for the company to build my barn, BCI was high on my list but I went with Apache because they build a gambrel style of barn. While still in the discussion stage I got to know the BCI folks pretty well and they told me that even if they didn't end up building my barn to feel free to call them for any advice. I'm naive enough to believe that they meant it! Sounds as if you got a good crew. This is one business where the people are all pretty good, quality folks. I wish my business (insurance) had as good a record!

That's encouraging to hear and my ongoing experience bears out your comments.
Looks like they will finish the barn tomorrow - I've taken some ongoing pixtures and will post them when developed. These guys have really taken the sting out of the mis-scheduling that I went through - they have done a top-notch job down to the smallest detail. They've worked steadily since Wed morning (this is Saturday) and have not tried to do a slam-it-up job. They have really taken the time to do it right and it looks great.
I can't say how pleased I am with them. I spent the day installing plumbing for the barn and really got to see how they work together, very methodically and they definitely know what they're doing. I've had a chance to really see how it all frames together and it's very rigid. I opted for 26 ga panels instead of the standard 29 ga and I'm glad I did - this just adds to the finished wall/roof strength.
Steel for the floor slab gets delivered Monday and if these creaky muscles will hold up, we're trying to have plumbing and reinforcement done by next weekend so we can get the concrete guy in here to pour and finish.
Thanks for your input and with some pictures I hope this experience will help somebody contemplating this type of construction.
Nick

Chevdog,
Please take a lot of extra pics of every stage of the prep for the concrete pour. I want to pour a floor in my barn and all the extra pics in an email would be greatly appreciated. I know not everyone here will be interested in all that detail but I'd really appreciate as much step-by-step as you can photograph. Thanks!

Post at least some of the pics. I, for one, am somewhat fasicnated by concrete. A gray, lumpy substance gets poured into forms and a few hours later; zingo! a floor!
Anyway, this would be a great addition to the pool of knowledge at CBN, much as TBN already has. Maybe put it under its own thread as not to hyjack this thread. Just an idea...

I will be happy to take some more pictures along the way if it will in some small way help pay back the great info I've received from both CBN and TBN Probably on a separate post.
The barn crew is paid and gone and now MY work continues. I also have some plumbing that I'm installing and I'll take some pictures of that too. I have already installed the plumbing for a bathroom with shower, will also install plumbing for hand wash sink at the end of the workbench, 2 area floor drains, and water line. The bath and sink drains will wye into the drain from the house to the septic tank, and the area drains will go to a french drain dug the length of the building.
My own non-scientific rating of BCI (scale of 10):
Response to inquiries and questions: 8
Pricing: 9
Scheduling: 2
Material Quality: 8
Material Quantity: 9
Construction Quality: 9
Site Cleanup: 4
Would I use them again? Yes - I would be sure to cover the materials right after delivery and stay on top of them for a construction date.

Chevdog, I read your rating for the BCI people. I would encourage you to cut the scheduling person a bit of slack though. I experienced some of the same delays and missed appointments that you did. My particular problem was the folks scheduled before me. The wife couldn't decide if they needed two cupolas or three, more windows or less, etc. When the guys showed up at my place I couldn't bait them into saying anything against the previous stop. What patience! In my own case, the 4 man crew was supposed to finish on Friday but there was some minor details. Normally builders will tell you they will be back the next week to finish. These guys did come back and spend most of Monday finishing the job. I'm attaching a picture of the final job. Hope the concrete pour went well and the back held up! Regards

That is beautiful - looks terrific.
I agree with your comments about realizing that there were others ahead of us, but I did want to clarify a point that I don't think is unreasonable. My request is that if I am given a start date then I expect either someone there or a phone call to let me know what the delay is. I knew that the weather hit us hard and that there was a backup on construction, but I got really tired of being given a date for the crew that would come and go with no crew and more importantly - no phone call. I hate to chase contractors I also want to note that my exasperation with the office did not extend to the crew - they were great. Man I like that barn you did !

Good looking barn appearance! I really like the "barn" motif for a metal utility building. The hay mow is a nice touch. \
As I am blending my latest metal bld with the new house Colors, roof style-pitch, and siding, a barn shape or color (wife vetoed RED) is not in the cards. (light sand with dark green roof, shutters and trim until otherwise notified)

There's a place I pass on my way out of town that's done in those colors. The house, barn, equipment shed and shop/garage are all the same and it looks really sharp.

I sure hope our grand experiment turns out sharp. I am going to join the metal roofed/trussed 3 car garage/shop/tractor and implement parking multi-purpose wing directly to the house. Hopefully using the same siding, roofing, and roof pitch will "make it work."
House will have 9 ft ceilings on ground floor and the multi-purpose "wing" will have 12 ft wall height. House will have 24 overhang except where there is wrap around covered porches while the multi-purpose wing will have 18 inch overhang. As best I can visualize, by turning the multi-purpose wing 45 degrees and joining it to the house at a corner, having a different overhang that is 3 ft higher than the house will not look too bad. There will be no way to sight down the eaves and see the difference due to 45 degree turn.
We'll see.
